Jawless vertebrates such as lamprey and hagfish lack T-cell and B-cell receptors; instead, they have unique antigen receptors known as variable lymphocyte receptors (VLRs). VLRs generate diversity by recombining highly diverse leucine-rich repeat modules and are expressed clonally on lymphocyte-like cells (LLCs). Thus far, two types of receptors, VLRA and VLRB, have been identified in lampreys and hagfish.

We report a 59-year-old man, first diagnosed as multiple sclerosis by open biopsy at another institution, who was then correctly diagnosed as PCNSBL after stereotactic biopsy at our hospital. The initial biopsy showed heavy lymphoid and macrophage influx with visible demyelination.

In the present study, we examined the effect of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) treatment of DCs during differentiation on IL-12 and IL-23 production in response to Toll-like receptor (TLR) stimulation. Bone marrow-derived DCs were generated by culturing murine bone marrow cells with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) alone (cont-DCs) or GM-CSF plus PGE(2) (PG-DCs).

Electron microscopic analyses of cellular interactions between the extraembryonic syncytium of the parasitic morula and the host embryonic epithelial cells showed that morula penetration into the host embryo did not cause obvious damage to the host cells, except for the abrasion of the embryonic cuticle. Epithelial cells of the host embryo extended microvilli toward the invading C.

We previously reported that nuclear positions both in darkness and in strong blue light are regulated by the blue light receptor phototropin2 in mesophyll cells. Here, we investigate the involvement of phototropin and the actin cytoskeleton in nuclear positioning in epidermal cells.

Materials And Methods: Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained. Three hundred ninety-eight patients underwent MR imaging of the breast, including DW MR (b values, 0 and 1500 sec/mm(2)) and contrast-enhanced MR imaging.
An insect dorsal vessel (DV) is well suited for a bioactuator since it is capable of contracting autonomously, and its tissue and cells are more environmentally robust under culturing conditions compared with mammalian tissue. In this study, electrical pulse stimulation was examined so as to regulate a bioactuator using the DV tissue. The DV tissue of a larva of Ctenoplusia agnate was assembled on a micropillar array, which was stimulated after culturing for about 3 wk.

We examined the role of TNF-alpha in generation of the IL-10-producing CD4(+) T cells by immature DCs. Immature bone marrow-derived DCs from wild type (WT) or TNF-alpha(-/-) mice were cocultured with CD4(+) T cells from OVA specific TCR transgenic mice (OT-II) in the presence of OVA(323-339) peptide.

Among them, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) seems to be related to the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate how CTGF is associated with the disease progression of RA.

In insects, the maintenance of hemocyte populations is regulated by mitotic division of circulating hemocytes and by discharge from hematopoietic organs. We found cell clusters in the hemolymph of Mamestra brassicae larvae that are composed of small, spherical cells.

Background: Macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration in adipose tissue may contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity-mediated metabolic disorders. Natural killer T (NKT) cells, which integrate proinflammatory cytokines, have been demonstrated in the atherosclerotic lesions and in visceral adipose tissue.
Objective: To determine whether NKT cells are involved in glucose intolerance and adipose tissue inflammation in diet-induced obese mice.
Purpose. Experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU), a Th1/Th17 cell-mediated autoimmune disease induced in mice, serves as a model of human endogenous uveitis. In this model, proinflammatory cytokines and various stimuli activate the transcriptional factor, nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), in the retina.

LacCer forms membrane microdomains coupled with the Src family kinase Lyn on the plasma membrane, and ligand binding to LacCer activates Lyn, resulting in neutrophil functions. In contrast, neutrophilic differentiated HL-60 cells do not have Lyn-associated LacCer-enriched microdomains and lack LacCer-mediated functions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTail resorption during amphibian metamorphosis has been thought to be controlled mainly by a cell-autonomous mechanism of programmed cell death triggered by thyroid hormone. However, we have proposed a role for the immune response in metamorphosis, based on the finding that syngeneic grafts of tadpole tail skin into adult Xenopus animals are rejected by T cells. To test this, we identified two tail antigen genes called ouro1 and ouro2 that encode keratin-related proteins.

Adult males of the grape borer, Xylotrechus pyrrhoderus, secrete (S)-2-hydroxy-3-octanone [(S)-1] and (2S,3S)-2,3-octanediol [(2S,3S)-2] from their nota of prothoraces as sex pheromone components. Their structural similarity suggests that one of them is the biosynthetic precursor of the other component. In order to confirm the biochemical conversion, deuterated derivatives of both components were synthesized by starting from a Wittig reaction between hexanal and an ylide derived from D(5)-iodoethane and ending with enantiomeric resolution by chiral HPLC.

Furthermore, EAU symptoms are ameliorated in OPN knockout mice or in B6 mice treated with anti-OPN antibody (M5). Recently, OPN has been shown to promote the Th1 response not only in the extracellular space as a secretory protein but also in cytosol as a signaling component.

Mutations in LMNA can cause various forms of cardiomyopathy with arrhythmia in an autosomal dominant manner. We collected and evaluated the clinical characteristics of unclassified familial cardiomyopathy with advanced AV block and sporadic cases with advanced AV block.

Subjects And Methods: Two hundred seventy-six patients with 277 lesions, including 15 mucinous carcinomas (13 pure type, two mixed type), 204 other malignant tumors, and 58 benign lesions, were examined with 1.5-T MRI at b values of 0 and 1,500 s/mm(2).
In this study, we examined the role of JAKs in regulation of inflammatory versus anti-inflammatory cytokine balance in murine conventional dendritic cells (DCs). Highly purified lipopolysaccharide (upLPS) combined with imiquimod (IQ) synergistically induced IL-10 production by DCs, while each ligand alone showed a slight effect on the IL-10 production. Marked phosphorylation of JAK2, STAT1 and STAT3 was detected in DCs following upLPS plus IQ stimulation.

In this study, we show that RAD18 is also recruited to ionizing radiation (IR)-induced sites of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) forming foci which are co-localized with 53BP1, NBS1, phosphorylated ATM, BRCA1 and gamma-H2AX. RAD18 associates with 53BP1 and is recruited to DSB sites in a 53BP1-dependent manner specifically during G1-phase, RAD18 monoubiquitinates KBD domain of 53BP1 at lysine 1268 in vitro.

We have established a continuous cell line from the fat body tissue of the longicorn beetle Plagionotus christophi. The cells have been serially subcultured in MGM450 medium, and the line has been designated as PC-1. The cells were grown in suspension and comprise largely flattened spindle- or oval-shaped cells morphologically related to blood cells of longicorn beetles.
