CD40 plays a critical role in adaptive immunity, and alveolar macrophages in patients with sarcoidosis express higher levels of CD40. This study investigated the association of rs1883832, a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism in the CD40 gene with susceptibility to sarcoidosis and phenotypes of sarcoidosis. Genotyping of rs1883832 in 175 Japanese patients with sarcoidosis and 150 age- and sex-matched controls revealed no significant difference between the genotypes of the patient and control groups (CC/CT/TT, 32.

He had experienced recurrent episodes of massive hemoptysis after epileptic seizures since the age of 28 years. He was admitted to Kyoto University Hospital with massive hemoptysis and hypoxia after an epileptic seizure of a few minutes' duration.

Objectives: To clarify associations of sputum YKL-40 levels with clinical indices in asthma and COPD.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the characteristics of patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma and to examine pathological findings, first site of recurrence and recurrence free-survival after surgery.
Methods: From June 2003 to May 2010, we performed 10 surgeries for retroperitoneal sarcomas. We chose 9 tumors after excluding 1 tumor that had already disseminated in the abdominal cavity.
Background And Objective: Genetic background is thought to be one of the risk factors for development of COPD. Recently, it has been proposed that the innate immune system is involved in the pathophysiology of COPD. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in the nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NOD)1 and NOD2 genes would be associated with the pathogenesis of COPD.

A 72-year-old woman on PD was hospitalized with abdominal pain and cloudy PD fluid (PDF). Although conventional antibiotic therapy was started because of a diagnosis of infectious peritonitis, low-grade fever, abdominal pain and a high number of white blood cells in PDF persisted.

Objectives: To clarify the relevance of plasma levels of SP in patients with persistent cough.
A 68-year-old man was admitted with acute renal failure caused by cholesterol embolization after undergoing carotid artery stenting. Hemodialysis therapy (HD) was immediately required because of uremia, using nafamostat mesilate as an anticoagulant for HD. However, blue toes and gangrene of the feet worsened.

Through a genome-wide association study and a replication study consisting of a total of 7,171 individuals with adult asthma (cases) and 27,912 controls in the Japanese population, we identified five loci associated with susceptibility to adult asthma. In addition to the major histocompatibility complex and TSLP-WDR36 loci previously reported, we identified three additional loci: a USP38-GAB1 locus on chromosome 4q31 (combined P = 1.

Diabetes was diagnosed about 10 years previously, at which time the patient's HbA(1)c level had been maintained at 6% by diet therapy and an oral hypoglycemic agent. In July, 2008, he was admitted with fever and hospitalized for pneumonia, which improved with antibiotic treatment and chest drainage.

Methods: Fifteen dental students were randomly enrolled in a 3-stage changeover system with a 1-week interval between each stage.
Background: In Japan, the population of patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) is <4% of the total number of patients with end-stage renal disease. Few systemic analyses have examined why the number of PD patients has not increased in Japan. We organized a registry to analyze PD patients and retrospectively investigated 561 PD patients (about 5% of all Japanese PD patients) from 13 hospitals in the Tokai area for 3 years from 2005.

Our previous study indicated that ERα inhibited TGF-β signaling by inducing the degradation of Smad in an estrogen-dependent manner. In the present study, we report that the suppressive effects of ERα and estrogen on tumor progression are mediated by inhibiting TGF-β signaling.

In this study, we analyzed the cumulative number of risk alleles at eight established susceptibility loci, HLA-DRB1, IRF5, STAT4, BLK, TNFAIP3, TNIP1, FCGR2B and TNFSF13, in 282 Japanese female SLE and 222 healthy female controls. The average number of risk alleles was significantly increased in SLE (8.

The aim of this study was to compare the microbial composition of the subgingival biofilm from teeth and implant sulci in relation to contents originating from internal parts of the implant, abutment and implant prosthesis. Twenty subgingival biofilm samples from the mesial and distal aspects of each tooth/implant and 29 samples from the internal parts of titanium implants, abutments and implant prostheses were evaluated for the presence of 18 bacterial species using DNA Checkerboard and the differences between samples from teeth and implants were assessed with Pearson's correlation analysis. The periodontal and peri-implantar sulci presented significantly higher bacterial counts than the implant-related sites (p < 0.

Seventy-seven complete denture wearers were randomly assigned into 2 groups, according to the product used for denture cleaning: Control group - conventional dentifrice (Kolynos-Super White); and Test group: experimental denture cleaning paste. Denture biofilm was collected at baseline and after 90 and 180 days after treatment by brushing the dentures with saline solution.

Aim: To investigate the root canal microbiota of primary teeth with apical periodontitis and the in vivo antimicrobial effects of a calcium hydroxide/chlorhexidine paste used as root canal dressing.
Design: Baseline samples were collected from 30 root canals of primary teeth with apical periodontitis. Then, the root canals were filled with a calcium hydroxide paste containing 1% chlorhexidine for 14 days and the second bacteriologic samples were taken prior to root canal filling.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the contamination of toothbrushes and pacifiers by Streptococcus mutans, and the efficacy of microwave and chlorhexidine for their disinfection.
Methods: Sixty pacifiers and 60 toothbrushes were contaminated with S mutans and then divided into groups according to the disinfection protocol: Group 1-chlorhexidine solution; Group 2-microwave sterilization; and Group 3-sterile tap water. The devices were evaluated microbiologically as to the formation of S mutans colonies/biofilms and were examined by scanning electron microscopy.
Purpose: Recently, there have been many reports that QuantiFERON TB-2G (QFT-2G) is useful for diagnosing active tuberculosis. However, it remains controversial whether QFT-2G is useful for diagnosing active tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients as well as immunocompetent ones. Therefore, we analyzed whether QFT-2G sensitivity is decreased in immunocompromised patients compared with that in immunocompetent patients and what factors affect the QFT-2G sensitivity.

Case Summary: A previously healthy 64-year-old man presented with a four-month history of productive cough and progressive dyspnea despite a combination therapy with inhaled salmeterol (50 μg bid) and fluticasone (500 μg bid), sustained-release theophylline, and pranlukast because of suspicion of asthma.
Objective: SPI1, also referred to as PU.1, is an Ets family transcription factor that interacts with IRF2, IRF4, and IRF8. In view of the significance of the type I interferon pathway in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), this study was undertaken to investigate a possible association between SPI1 polymorphisms and SLE.

The biological actions of MK are elicited through its chemotactic activity and chemokine-driven inflammatory pathway. Post-infectious glomerulonephritis is caused by the deposition of immune complexes into glomeruli by infiltrating a number of inflammatory cells.
