Purpose: Stroke family caregivers often struggle to provide care. The purpose of the current study was to determine: (a) ease or difficulty with caregiving tasks; (b) life changes because of providing care; and (c) relationship between caregiving tasks and life changes.

Method: A descriptive correlational design was used.

Gender-affirming mastectomy surgery is highly desired within both transmasculine and nonbinary patient populations. The development of cardiac arrhythmias has been reported within this population. Introduction: Dysregulated androgen receptor (AR) activity is central to various diseases, particularly prostate cancer (PCa), in which it drives tumour initiation and progression. A study of PGP 9.5 immunohistochemical labeling on formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues for epidermal nerve fiber density testing.

There have been several methods established for immunohistochemical labeling of the PGP 9.5 antigen in human tissue for the assessment of epidermal nerve fiber density, none of which uses neutral-buffered formalin as the preferred fixative for paraffin-embedded tissue. The literature maintains that formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues are unable to be used for this purpose and that other fixatives must be used due to the cross-linkages caused by formalin fixation.

Prostate Cancer's Silent Partners: Fibroblasts and Their Influence on Glutamine Metabolism Manipulation.

Cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF)s in the tumour microenvironment (TME) modulate the extracellular matrix, interact with cancer cells, and facilitate communication with infiltrating leukocytes, significantly contributing to cancer progression and therapeutic response. In prostate cancer (PCa), CAFs promote malignancy through metabolic rewiring, cancer stem cell regulation, and therapy resistance. Pre-clinical studies indicate that targeting amino acid metabolism, particularly glutamine (Gln) metabolism, reduces cancer proliferation and stemness.

Management of the Spastic Elbow Deformity in Adult Patients With Upper Motor Neuron Syndrome.

Spastic elbow deformity in patients with upper motor neuron injuries results from an imbalance of flexor and extensor forces across the ulnohumeral joint. Although not all deformities reflect the same underlying imbalances, the elbow most commonly rests in a flexed position. Patients may present with a combination of muscle spasticity, myostatic contracture, and/or joint contracture.

Wrist Motion Assessment in Tennis Players using Three-Dimensional Motion Capture and Dynamic Electromyography.

 Tennis players often present with ulnar-sided wrist pain, which may reflect repetitive stress and/or faulty mechanics. There is a role for investigating the biomechanics of tennis strokes and how they may relate to wrist pathology. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether three-dimensional motion capture technology and dynamic electromyography (EMG), when used to study groundstrokes in elite junior tennis players, reveals patterns of upper extremity motion that may correlate with the development of clinically relevant pathology.

The role of vascularized bone grafting for scaphoid nonunions in adolescents.

A total of 26 adolescent patients were treated for scaphoid nonunion with a vascularized bone graft from either the medial femoral condyle or dorsal distal radius. There was an 85% union incidence, improved carpal alignment and a low incidence of complications.

Modified Frailty Index predicts postoperative complications following adult-acquired buried penis surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: Given that patients with morbid obesity are predisposed to frailty, we sought to determine whether the 5-Factor Modified Frailty Index (mFI-5) predicts postoperative complications following surgery for adult-acquired buried penis, and secondarily, to compare the mFI-5 to body mass index (BMI) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status as preoperative risk stratification measures.

Methods: We included all patients who underwent surgical management for adult-acquired buried penis at an academic Level I trauma center between 2015 and 2023. A manual chart review was performed to collect data on patient demographics, modified frailty index variables, intraoperative data, postoperative outcomes, and complications.

Expanding Our Role in Headache Management: A Systematic Review and Algorithmic Approach to Surgical Management of Postcraniotomy Headache.

Background: Chronic postcraniotomy headache (PCH) is common and debilitating. Unfortunately, the literature on this topic is sparse without clear management algorithms. Possible etiologies of PCH include nerve injury and/or entrapment, hardware, dural adhesions, or musculoskeletal injury.

Postoperative Outcomes following Buried Penis Reconstruction: A Single-Institution Experience Using the Wisconsin Classification System.

Background: Adult acquired buried penis (AABP) is a complex condition often necessitating surgical intervention. This study sought to examine the validity of the Wisconsin Classification System (WCS) in guiding the surgical management of AABP. In addition, the authors aimed to identify which factors contribute to postoperative complications and persistent symptoms following AABP repair.

Climate change effects on denitrification performance of woodchip bioreactors treating agricultural tile drainage.

Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors (WBRs) are a nature-based technology that are increasingly used to control nonpoint source nitrate (NO) pollution in agricultural catchments. The treatment effectiveness of WBRs depends on temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT), both of which are affected by climate change. Warmer temperatures will increase microbial denitrification rates, but the extent to which the resulting benefits to treatment performance may be offset by intensified precipitation and shorter HRTs is not clear.

Toward More Comprehensive Evaluations of 3D Immersive Sketching, Drawing, and Painting.

To understand current practice and explore the potential for more comprehensive evaluations of 3D immersive sketching, drawing, and painting, we present a survey of evaluation methodologies used in existing 3D sketching research, a breakdown and discussion of important phases (sub-tasks) in the 3D sketching process, and a framework that suggests how these factors can inform evaluation strategies in future 3D sketching research. Existing evaluations identified in the survey are organized and discussed within three high-level categories: 1) evaluating the 3D sketching activity, 2) evaluating 3D sketching tools, and 3) evaluating 3D sketching artifacts. The new framework suggests targeting evaluations to one or more of these categories and identifying relevant user populations.

Measuring Success in Headache Surgery: A Comparison of Different Outcomes Measures.

Background: Studies of migraine surgery have relied on quantitative, patient-reported measures like the Migraine Headache Index (MHI) and validated surveys to study the outcomes and impact of headache surgery. It is unclear whether a single metric or a combination of outcomes assessments is best suited to do so.

Methods: All patients who underwent headache surgery had an MHI calculated and completed the Headache Impact Test, the Migraine Disability Assessment Test, the Migraine-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire, and an institutional ad hoc survey preoperatively and postoperatively.

Abductor Pollicis Longus Tendon Abnormalities and Release in Children With Congenital Clasped Thumb.

Background: Congenital clasped thumb is associated with deficient thumb extensor tendons. Reconstruction includes tendon transfer. Here, we describe a variant of the abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendon, not previously reported, contributing to the flexion deformity.

Introduction: Approximately 80% of amputations are complicated by neuromas. Methods for neuroma management include nerve translocation into bone and implantation into skeletal muscle grafts, which have also facilitated the development of regenerative neural interfaces to enable fixation of prosthetics with motor and sensory feedback. However, molecular-level differences between nerves in these environments have not been investigated.

Introduction: The precise mechanism through which excessive tension confers poor outcomes in nerve gap repair is yet to be elucidated. Furthermore, the effect of tension on gene expression in regenerating nerves has not been characterized. This study investigated differential gene expression in transected nerves repaired under high and minimal tension.

Reciprocal Associations Between Maternal Smoking Cessation and Breastfeeding.

Pregnancy is a motivating factor to quit smoking, but many women relapse postpartum. The underlying mechanisms and the necessary duration of breastfeeding that provide long-term protection against postpartum smoking relapse are unknown. We aimed to examine (1) associations of smoking cessation with breastfeeding initiation and duration; (2) necessary breastfeeding duration to reduce or prevent risk of postpartum smoking relapse.

Ketamine for the Treatment of Chronic Pain: A Comprehensive Review.

Systematic Review of Replant Salvage and Cost Utility Analysis of Inpatient Monitoring After Digit Replantation.

Purpose: Digit replantation is a high-stakes procedure that has been shown to be cost-effective, especially for multiple-digit replantation. However, it is associated with prolonged lengths of stay (LOS) for monitoring and attempts at salvage. The cost-effectiveness of prolonged inpatient stays presumes that this is necessary and inherent to the replantation.

No Difference in Complications Between Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction With the Docking and Modified Jobe Techniques: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: The most commonly used techniques for elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR) are the docking and modified Jobe figure-of-8 techniques. Previous literature has suggested that UCLR with the docking technique is associated with fewer complications; however, these studies included results from the original classic Jobe technique without controlling for the effects of flexor pronator mass (FPM) detachment and routine submuscular ulnar nerve transposition (UNT).
