We investigated the effect of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including medical, industrial, and agricultural chemicals, on 3,3',5-L-[125I]triiodothyronine ([125I]T3) binding to purified Japanese quail transthyretin (qTTR), a major thyroid hormone-binding protein in plasma, and to the ligand-binding domain of thyroid hormone receptor beta (qTR LBD). Scatchard plots of T3 binding to qTTR and qTR LBD revealed two classes of binding sites, with Kd values of 6.9 and 185 nM, and a single class of binding sites, with Kd value of 0.

Astrocytes are abundant in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), particularly in the retinorecipient region. Using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunocytochemistry, we investigated the effect of light on the development of astrocytes in the SCN housing under light-dark (LD) or constant dark (DD) conditions after birth. Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high-p(T) hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Effects of chronic hindlimb suspension on landing performance in response to head-down drop in rats.

Effects of hindlimb unloading and reloading on the patterns of landing and posture adjustment in response to head-down drop from a height of approximately 30 cm were investigated in rats. Seven weeks old male Wistar rats were hindlimb-unloaded by tail suspension for 9 consecutive weeks. Motor tests were performed immediately after the termination of suspension and recovery patterns were checked during 8 weeks of ambulation recovery.

Introduction: The efficacy and toxicity of salvage chemotherapy with a combination of irinotecan hydrochloride (CPT-11) and mitomycin C (MMC) for platinum-and paclitaxel-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer are reported.

Case Report: Three consecutive patients with platinum- and paclitaxel- resistant epithelial ovarian cancer were treated with 120 mg/m2 of CPT-11 (days 1 and 15) and 7 mg/m2 of MMC (days 1 and 15) every four weeks. In all three cases partial responses were achieved and overall survivals were 17 months or longer.

The balance function is a new observable based on the principle that charge is locally conserved when particles are pair produced. Balance functions have been measured for charged particle pairs and identified charged pion pairs in Au+Au collisions at the square root of SNN = 130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using STAR. Balance functions for peripheral collisions have widths consistent with model predictions based on a superposition of nucleon-nucleon scattering.

Two-peaked synchronization in day/night expression rhythms of the fibrinogen gene cluster in the mouse liver.

Genes expressed with day/night rhythms in the mouse liver were searched for by microarray analysis using an in-house array harboring mouse liver cDNAs. The rhythmic expression with a single peak and trough level was confirmed by RNA blot analysis for 3beta-Hsd and Gabarapl1 genes exhibiting a peak in the light phase and Spot14, Hspa8, Hspa5, and Hsp84-1 genes showing a peak in the dark phase. On the other hand, mRNA levels for all of the three fibrinogen subunits, Aalpha, Bbeta and gamma, exhibited two peaks each in the light and dark phases in a synchronized manner.

Characterization of neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y5 receptor-mediated obesity in mice: chronic intracerebroventricular infusion of D-Trp(34)NPY.

To clarify the role of the neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y5 receptor subtype in energy homeostasis, the effect of the intracerebroventricular infusion of a selective Y5 agonist, D-Trp(34)NPY, was investigated in C57BL/6J mice. Intracerebroventricular infusion of D-Trp(34)NPY (5 and 10 microg/d) produced hyperphagia and body weight gain, accompanied by increased adipose tissue weight, hypercholesterolemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperleptinemia. Oral administration of a selective Y5 antagonist at a dose of 100 mg/kg twice a day completely suppressed all of these D-Trp(34)NPY-induced changes, indicating that chronic activation of the Y5 receptor produces hyperphagia and obesity.

It has been reported that abnormal steps associated with an ankle hyper-extension during walking were observed in adult rats after 2 weeks of hindlimb suspension (Canu and Falempin, 1997 & 1998). Methods: The expression of the lymphocyte markers, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, T-cell-restricted intracellular antigen (TIA)-1, and granzyme B (GrB)-7 in IELs and that of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in apoptotic epithelial cells were evaluated by immunohistochemistry, using endoscopic biopsy specimens from 20 patients with AGMLs and 20 controls.

Disappearance of back-to-back high-pT hadron correlations in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s NN ] =200 GeV.

Azimuthal correlations for large transverse momentum charged hadrons have been measured over a wide pseudorapidity range and full azimuth in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The small-angle correlations observed in p+p collisions and at all centralities of Au+Au collisions are characteristic of hard-scattering processes previously observed in high-energy collisions. A strong back-to-back correlation exists for p+p and peripheral Au+Au.

[Effective transarterial neoadjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel (TXL) in a case of locally advanced breast cancer].

The patient was a 49-year-old woman who had locally advanced breast cancer with skin invasion. She was placed on neoadjuvant weekly systemic chemotherapy of TXL (65 mg/m2) and ADM (20 mg/m2). After systemic chemotherapy, she underwent 2 courses of transarterial neoadjuvant chemotherapy of TXL (day 1, 8, 15).

Design and synthesis of the potent, orally available, brain-penetrable arylpyrazole class of neuropeptide Y5 receptor antagonists.

Novel arylpyrazole derivatives were synthesized and evaluated as neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y5 receptor antagonists. Compound (-)-7, which features a novel chiral 2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene moiety, showed good binding affinity and antagonistic activity for the Y5 receptor. After intracerebroventricular administration in SD rats, (-)-7 significantly inhibited food intake that was induced by the centrally administered Y5-preferring agonist, bovine pancreatic polypeptide, but had only a negligible effect on NPY-induced feeding.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals: interference of thyroid hormone binding to transthyretins and to thyroid hormone receptors.

We examined the effects of industrial, medical and agricultural chemicals on 3,5,3'-L-[125I]triiodothyronine ([125I]T(3)) binding to transthyretins (TTRs) and thyroid hormone receptors (TRs). Among the chemicals investigated diethylstilbestrol (DES) was the most powerful inhibitor of [125I]T(3) binding to chicken and bullfrog TTR (cTTR and bTTR). Inhibition of [125I]T(3) binding was more apparent in cTTR than bTTR.

Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in the hard scattering regime at RHIC.

Azimuthal anisotropy (v(2)) and two-particle angular correlations of high p(T) charged hadrons have been measured in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c, where hard processes are expected to contribute significantly. The two-particle angular correlations exhibit elliptic flow and a structure suggestive of fragmentation of high p(T) partons. The monotonic rise of v(2)(p(T)) for p(T)<2 GeV/c is consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow calculations.
