CT protocols that diagnose COVID-19 vary in regard to the associated radiation exposure and the desired image quality (IQ). This study aims to evaluate CT protocols of hospitals participating in the RACOON (Radiological Cooperative Network) project, consolidating CT protocols to provide recommendations and strategies for future pandemics. In this retrospective study, CT acquisitions of COVID-19 patients scanned between March 2020 and October 2020 (RACOON phase 1) were included, and all non-contrast protocols were evaluated.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTransient receptor potential melastatin (TRPM) channels, a subfamily of the TRP superfamily, constitute a diverse group of ion channels involved in mediating crucial cellular processes like calcium homeostasis. These channels exhibit complex regulation, and one of the key regulatory mechanisms involves their interaction with calmodulin (CaM), a cytosol ubiquitous calcium-binding protein. The association between TRPM channels and CaM relies on the presence of specific CaM-binding domains in the channel structure.

Background And Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in vascular density in the macula after pars plana vitrectomy for idiopathic macular hole (IMD) with macular peeling and flap.
Methods: A prospective study of 35 eyes in 34 patients who had undergone standard surgery. Evaluated parameters were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), central macular thickness (CRT), macular volume (TMV) and vascular density of the superficial and deep capillary plexus.
The nucleoside analog entecavir (ETV) is a first-line pharmacotherapy for chronic hepatitis B in adult and pediatric patients. However, due to insufficient data on placental transfer and its effects on pregnancy, ETV administration is not recommended for women after conception. To expand knowledge of safety, we focused on evaluating the contribution of nucleoside transporters (NBMPR sensitive ENTs and Na dependent CNTs) and efflux transporters, P-glycoprotein (ABCB1), breast cancer resistance protein (ABCG2), and multidrug resistance-associated transporter 2 (ABCC2), to the placental kinetics of ETV.

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of diabetic macular edema (DME) therapy using subthreshold micropulse laser (SMPL) with a wavelength of 577 nm during a long-term monitoring period of 5 years.
Methods: The cohort included the total number of 52 eyes of 34 patients with DME. All underwent the standard laser treatment for the diabetic retinopathy outside the macula and DME treatment with SMPL.
Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute significantly to atherogenesis. We and others have demonstrated that mildly elevated serum bilirubin levels protect against coronary and peripheral atherosclerosis, most likely due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of bilirubin. The aim of the present study was to assess serum bilirubin and the markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in both healthy subjects and patients with various forms of atherosclerosis.

Methods: Patients with bilaterally decreased near vision (not better than 0.3 logMAR with the best correction), pseudophakia, were included in the project.
Background/purpose: The standard treatment for boys with non-syndromic cryptorchidism is an early orchidopexy. It is unclear if surgical intervention alone is enough for future fertility. Recent studies show benefit of neoadjuvant or adjuvant hormonal treatment with gonadorelin (GnRH) for spermatogonia maturation based on testicular biopsy.

Here, we studied the TRPM5 member, the receptor exposed to calcium-mediated activation, resulting in taste transduction. It is known that most TRP channels are highly modulated through interactions with extracellular and intracellular agents.

A prospective study was held at University Hospital in Hradec Králové to explore sensitivity of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to OC compression and eventual changes after a decompression. 16 patients with OC compression, caused by different sellar pathologies, were included.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the use of cyclocryocoagulation (CCK) in secondary neovascular glaucomas performed at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and University Hospital Hradec Králové in the years 2016-2019.
Material And Methods: In a retrospective study, 30 procedures of 26 eyes of 24 patients were evaluated. All patients underwent CCK surgery.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disorder worldwide. The aim of our study was to assess the role of bilirubin, and the heme oxygenase 1 () and bilirubin UDP-glucuronosyl transferase () promoter gene variants, which are involved in bilirubin homeostasis, in the NAFLD development in adult patients. The study was performed on 84 patients with NAFLD and 103 age/sex-matched controls.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTransient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) represents melastatin TRP channel with two significant functions, cation permeability and kinase activity. TRPM7 is widely expressed among tissues and is therefore involved in a variety of cellular functions representing mainly Mg homeostasis, cellular Ca flickering, and the regulation of DNA transcription by a cleaved kinase domain translocated to the nucleus. TRPM7 participates in several important biological processes in the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Aim: To compare parameters of phacoemulsification using handpiece Active Sentry and Centurion Ozil.
Methods: We have evaluated results of 200 eyes of 129 patients that were operated for cataract at the Department of Ophthalmology. All surgeries were performed by one surgeon (NJ).
Three Fe-based ribbon-type samples prepared by a conventional planar flow casting process are studied from the viewpoint of the amorphous FeSiB and partially surface crystallized FeSiB, and FeNbB, microstructures. Surface magnetic properties are investigated by magneto-optical Kerr microscopy, allowing the measurement of a local hysteresis loop from a selected area on the ribbon surface, and simultaneously, a domain structure corresponding to a definite point at the loop. For an amorphous sample, the changes in the slopes of hysteresis loops are related either to the size of the selected surface area, from which the loop is measured, or to the type, width, and movement of magnetic domains through this area.

For six months, we evaluated changes in neurophysiological parameters in patients implanted with a "Scharioth macula lens" (SML; a center near high add + 10 D and peripheral plano carrier bifocal lens designed to be located between the iris and an artificial lens).
Methods: Fourteen patients (5 M, 9 F, 63-87 years) with dry AMD were examined prior to and at 3 days after, as well as 1, 2, and 6 months after, implantation using pattern-reversal, motion-onset, and cognitive evoked potentials, psychophysical tests evaluating distant and near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity.
The authors present case reports of two women, who were hospitalized in Department of Ophthalmology, University hospital Hradec Králové for ocular symptoms of rosacea. In the beginning there were relatively severe objective findings in the anterior segment of the eye in both cases - significant cornea graying with superficial and deep cornea vascularization in both eyes. On faces of both patients there were more or less typical sings of general illness.
