Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause skin photoaging by inducing secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). It has been reported that MMPs, especially MMP-1, -3 and -9, reduce elasticity of the dermis by degrading collagen. Polyphenols are a group of compounds that exist mainly in glycosides in the plants and they may transform to aglycone after hydrolysis.

This study investigated whether Terminalia catappa L. hydrophilic extract (TCLW) prevents photoaging in human dermal fibroblasts after exposure to UVB radiation. TCLW exhibited DPPH free radical scavenging activity and protected erythrocytes against AAPH-induced hemolysis.
