Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine how incorporating the Dutch National Pharmacotherapy Assessment (DNPA) in medical training affects junior doctors' prescribing knowledge and skills, and to explore the link between curriculum type and their prescribing competence.
  • Researchers analyzed data from a 2016 longitudinal study involving 556 junior doctors from 11 medical schools in the Netherlands and Belgium, assessing their knowledge and skills through multiple-choice questions and clinical scenarios over a year after graduation.
  • Findings indicated that junior doctors trained with the DNPA scored significantly higher in knowledge assessments and improved more in skills over time compared to those from conventional curricula, particularly those with a mixed curriculum approach.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how the prescribing knowledge and skills of junior doctors in the Netherlands and Belgium develop in the year after graduation. We also analysed differences in knowledge and skills between surgical and nonsurgical junior doctors.

Methods: This international, multicentre (n = 11), longitudinal study analysed the learning curves of junior doctors working in various specialties via three validated assessments at about the time of graduation, and 6 months and 1 year after graduation.

Aims: Prescribing is a core skill for junior doctors, yet 8-10% of their prescriptions contain errors. To ensure adequate training in prescribing, it is important to define the diseases for which junior doctors should be competent to prescribe. The aim of the present study was therefore to identify the essential diseases in prescribing for junior doctors.

Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) is a new treatment modality for uveal melanoma. We studied whether application of TTT influences the immunogenicity of the tumour cells in vivo or the expression of molecules related to apoptosis. Immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies directed against HLA molecules, HMB45, P53, Fas ligand (FasL), Fas, Bcl-2 and tumour-infiltrating cells was applied to sections of an enucleated eye containing a uveal melanoma that received TTT 1 week before enucleation.

In order to determine the possible use of uveal melanoma cell lines as stimulators in immunotherapy, we evaluated the expression of the human genes for MAGE-1, -2 and -3, gp100 and tyrosinase in uveal melanoma cell lines. mRNA expression of the MAGE-1, -2 and -3, gp100 and tyrosinase genes and the HLA class I specificity were determined in five primary and three metastatic uveal melanoma cell lines. Expression of the examined genes was heterogeneous in the primary and metastatic cell lines.
