Anti-HIV antibody in saliva: an assessment of the role of the components of saliva, testing methodologies and collection systems.

The various components of saliva, namely mixed saliva, parotid saliva, submandibular saliva, crevicular fluid and minor (labial) gland secretions, were collected from 63 known HIV antibody seropositive patients. A commercial test system, Wellcozyme HIV 1+2, and an antibody capture ELISA (GACELISA), were compared for sensitivity against all components. Sensitivity of the GACELISA system was 100% in 123 mixed saliva, 121 parotid saliva and 127 labial fluid samples, and 98% in 99 submandibular samples and 127 crevicular fluid samples.

Confirmation of hepatitis C virus antibody in blood donors.

Of 103,203 donations collected in Scotland and Northern Ireland over a 3-month period and screened for HCV antibody by Ortho or Abbott second-generation ELISAs, 340 were found repeatedly reactive. Supplementary testing with RIBA-2 resulted in 77 being classified as positive, 130 as indeterminate, and 133 as negative. HIV testing among injecting drug users in Glasgow.

The use of saliva rather than blood for epidemiological studies of HIV prevalence, especially among injecting drug users, has several practical advantages. In a cross-sectional, behavioural and prevalence study among drug users in Glasgow during 1990, salivary samples were therefore obtained by the use of salivettes. Such samples were requested for anonymous anti-HIV testing from 498 persons in locations varying from residential rehabilitation centres to the open streets.

Female streetworking prostitution and HIV infection in Glasgow.

Objectives: To identify the extent of HIV infection and injecting drug use among female streetworking prostitutes in Glasgow; to estimate the size of the female streetworking prostitute population in the city; and to estimate the number of HIV positive women working as prostitutes on the streets in Glasgow.

Design: Observation and interviewing of female prostitutes over seven months in red light district; analysis of saliva samples for presence of antibodies to HIV; capture-recapture approach to estimating the size of the female streetworking prostitute population.
