Article Synopsis
  • Three types of muscular dystrophy, called dystroglycanopathies, are linked to problems in the ribitol pathway and involve specific gene mutations.
  • Ribose supplementation was tested in a patient with limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2I, showing it was well tolerated and led to significant increases in a beneficial compound (CDP-ribitol) and a decrease in muscle enzyme levels.
  • Although the clinical and patient-reported outcomes didn't show objective improvements, the patient felt subjective benefits in muscle strength, fatigue, and pain, suggesting more research is needed on ribose's effects.

Endothelial function and integrity are compromised after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), but how this affects immune responses broadly remains unknown. Using a preclinical model of CMV reactivation after BMT, we found compromised antiviral humoral responses induced by IL-6 signaling. IL-6 signaling in T cells maintained Th1 cells, resulting in sustained IFN-γ secretion, which promoted endothelial cell (EC) injury, loss of the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) responsible for IgG recycling, and rapid IgG loss.

The Itezhi-tezhi Dam on the Kafue River in Zambia is a major capture fishery. However, the upstream reaches of the Kafue River receive effluents from copper mines. It was unclear whether fish health in the dam is adversely affected due to the mining effluents.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem worldwide, with an estimated high burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In these settings, tackling the problem of AMR is often constrained by a lack of reliable surveillance data due to limited use of microbiological diagnostics in clinical practice.

Objectives: The aim of this article is to present an overview of essential elements for setting up an AMR surveillance system in LMICs, to summarize the steps taken to develop such a system in the country of Georgia, and to describe its impact on microbiology laboratories.

Sharks are not only threatened, but also have a low fecundity as they are being overfished. The shark family, Sphyrnidae, consists of nine species of which three are found in South African oceans. One of the three Sphyrnidae species, the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) are the most common, but their biology and mode of reproduction are not extensively studied in terms of their reproductive biology.
