Over the past several decades there has been an increase in the number of chronic noncommunicable diseases worldwide largely due to changes in diet and lifestyle, as well as exposure to adverse environmental factors. The so-called omics technologies (genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and transcriptomic) are used as tools for comprehensive analysis and monitoring of human health. In the course of investigating the potential of costimulatory signals in anticancer immunotherapy strategies, we have observed that HeLa cells (a human cervical carcinoma cell line) cocultured with peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) acquire the capacity to inhibit PBL proliferation in response to interleukin-2 (IL-2). This immuno-inhibitory phenotype was further shown to result from induction of the tryptophan-catabolizing enzyme, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), by interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) secreted from cocultured allo-reactive PBL.

The method for restoring the continuity of the gastrointestinal tract after gastric resection was individualized according to the location of the ulcer, the patient's age, the character of complications of peptic ulcer, the topographoanatomical conditions in the zone of the operation, and the motility and acid-producing activity of the stomach. The indications and contraindications for various types of gastrointestinal anastomoses are discussed.
