The data of clinical examination, diagnostic models and panoramic x-rays investigation of the 332 patients at the age from 6 to 18 years with adentia were analysed. The congenital absence of more than 6 teeth was defined as oligodontia. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of missing teeth patterns and other dental abnormalities such as microdontia, persistent deciduous teeth, ankylosis, taurodontism, impaction and transposition in children and adolescents with isolated and syndromic oligodontia to optimize the diagnostic and orthodontic treatment plan.

The paper presents the data of literature review on epidemiology, patterns and prevalence of hypodontia depending on race, nationality and gender of the patients. Correlation between congenital absence of the temporary and permanent teeth are discussed as well as the matters of the terminology and classification depending on the severity of this abnormality.

The study of the whole range of measures of primary dentofacial anomalies prevention has determined the most often used methods of their prophylaxis. It is also shown that consultations with specialists in the allied medical areas and use of technical preventive devices are underestimated. Information modalities for patients, hygiene (sanitary) education are not at due level.
