Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates a new method for establishing population-based reference intervals (popRIs) using biological variation (BV) data rather than traditional single measurement results from 120 reference individuals.
  • The proposed model defines the population set point (PSP) using a combination of BV and analytical variation, calculating RI limits by analyzing data from 143 individuals across 48 clinical measures with varying sample sizes.
  • Results indicate that the BV-based popRIs largely align with conventional intervals, needing fewer reference individuals while still achieving acceptable coverage of the population, suggesting easier implementation if reliable BV data is accessible.

Background: The ongoing debate regarding the need for screening Cushing's syndrome (CS) in patients with obesity continues. The objectives of this study were to establish the prevalence of CS in the population with obesity and assess how metabolic health status influences cortisol levels following the 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST).

Methods: This retrospective study included 1008 patients with obesity who underwent screening with the 1 mg DST for CS.

Background: Plasma copeptin measurement is useful for the differential diagnoses of polyuria-polydipsia syndrome. It has also been proposed as a prognostic marker for cardiovascular diseases. However, limited information is available about the within- (CVI) and between-subject (CVG) biological variation (BV).

Background: Measurement of serum amino acid (AA) concentrations is important in particular for the diagnosis and monitoring of inborn errors of AA metabolism. To ensure optimal clinical interpretation of AAs, reliable biological variation (BV) data are essential. In the present study, we derived BV data for 22 non-essential, conditionally essential, and essential AAs and assessed differences in BV of AAs related to sex.

Only a few subacute thyroiditis (SAT) cases secondary to hypocortisolemia developed after successfully treating Cushing's disease (CD) have been reported. In this report, we present an SAT case, which developed immediately after discontinuation of steroid treatment for hypocortisolemia after the successful treatment of CD. A 54-year-old female patient who had recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus was admitted to our center with complaints of proximal myopathy and obesity.
