Blubber is a multifunctional tissue essential to the survival of cetaceans. Histological assessment of blubber may be useful in determining odontocete nutritional state but a greater understanding of specific variation across the body is needed. We report on morphological variation of the blubber according to girth axes and sampling planes in a sub-adult male, bycaught false killer whale () using metrics of blubber thickness (BT), adipocyte area (AA), and adipocyte index (AI).

Toxoplasma gondii is a significant threat to endangered Hawaiian wildlife including birds and marine mammals. To estimate the prevalence of T. gondii in stranded cetaceans from 1997 to 2021 in Hawai'i, we tested tissues from 37 stranded spinner dolphins Stenella longirostris and 51 stranded individuals that represented 18 other cetacean species.

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a global threat to cetaceans. We report a novel morbillivirus from a Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) that stranded in Maui, Hawaii in 2018 that is dissimilar to the beaked whale morbillivirus previously identified from Hawaii and to other CeMV strains. Histopathological findings included intranuclear inclusions in bile duct epithelium, lymphoid depletion, rare syncytial cells and non-suppurative meningitis.

Total cellular and viral RNA isolated from cells infected with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) strain 2724 was used for reverse transcription of viral specific sequences encoding the putative signal sequence and protein-encoding region of gp48. The cDNA template was amplified twice by the polymerase chain reaction with a nested set of primers designed from nucleotide sequences of cytopathic BVDV strains NADL and 72, and ligated into a plasmid vector. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cloned cDNA indicated it was 921 base pairs long, encoded 307 amino acid residues, had high sequence homology to other pestiviruses, and had no significant homology to members of the Flaviviridae.
