Introduction: Lung cancer is often diagnosed by cytology, necessitating predictive molecular marker analyses on cytological specimens. The gold standard for detection of predictive anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearrangements is fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), but FISH is both expensive and often challenging to interpret. Hemangioma of the thyroid gland is an extremely rare condition. We report a case of a primary cavernous hemangioma in the left lobe of the thyroid gland in an 84-year-old woman. Ultrasound examination of the lesion showed an inhomogeneous and hypoechoic nodule that was well demarcated from the rest of the left lobe and hypovascular on color Doppler ultrasound.

Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy has shown to be a safe and cost-effective method for diagnostic assessment in complex and nonpalpable lesions. Experience in aspiration technique, smearing and fixation of the sampled probe are prerequisites for a good diagnostic yield.
