Microplastics (MPs) pollution has gained attention due to its ecological threats and potential economic impacts. Yet significant knowledge gaps remain in understanding MPs effects on marine organisms' physiology. This study quantifies the physiological impacts of MPs on farmed mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) across various locations in the Mediterranean Sea by combining a laboratory experiment with a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model.

Rising surface temperatures are projected to cause more frequent and intense droughts in the world's drylands. This can lead to land degradation, mobilization of soil particles, and an increase in dust aerosol emissions from arid and semi-arid regions. Dust aerosols are a key source of bio-essential nutrients, can be transported in the atmosphere over large distances, and ultimately deposited onto the ocean's surface, alleviating nutrient limitation and increasing oceanic primary productivity.

Bacteriophages (phages) are increasingly considered for both treatment and early detection of bacterial pathogens given their specificity and rapid infection kinetics. Here, we exploit an engineered phage expressing nanoluciferase to detect signals associated with lysis spanning single cells to populations. Using several strains we found that the latent period, burst size, fraction of infected cells, and efficiency of plating inferred from fluorescent light intensity signals were consistent with inferences from conventional population assays.

Brown algae are multicellular photosynthetic organisms that have evolved independently of plants and other algae. Here, we have studied the determinism of body axis formation in the kelp Saccharina latissima. After microdissection of the embryo, we show that the stalk, an empty cell that retains the embryo on the maternal tissue, represses longitudinal cell divisions in the early embryo, thereby reinforcing the establishment of the initial apico-basal axis.
