International study on inter-reader variability for circulating tumor cells in breast cancer.

Introduction: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have been studied in breast cancer with the CellSearch® system. Given the low CTC counts in non-metastatic breast cancer, it is important to evaluate the inter-reader agreement.

Methods: CellSearch® images (N = 272) of either CTCs or white blood cells or artifacts from 109 non-metastatic (M0) and 22 metastatic (M1) breast cancer patients from reported studies were sent to 22 readers from 15 academic laboratories and 8 readers from two Veridex laboratories.

Bisphosphonates modulate vital functions of human osteoblasts and affect their interactions with breast cancer cells.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are in clinical use for the treatment of breast cancer patients with bone metastases. Their anti-resorptive effect is mainly explained by inhibition of osteoclast activity, but recent evidence also points to a direct action of BPs on bone-forming osteoblasts. However, the mechanisms how BPs influence osteoblasts and their interactions with breast cancer cells are still poorly characterized.

Death-inducing receptors and apoptotic changes in lymphocytes of patients with heart transplant vasculopathy.

The specific role of lymphocyte apoptosis and transplant-associated atherosclerosis is not well understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of T cell apoptotic pathways in patients with heart transplant vasculopathy. Amongst 40 patients with cardiac heart failure class IV who have undergone heart transplantation, 20 recipients with transplant-associated coronary artery disease (TACAD) and 20 with non-TACAD were investigated one year postoperative.

Impaired T cell proliferation, increased soluble death-inducing receptors and activation-induced T cell death in patients undergoing haemodialysis.

Haemodialysis is a widespread option for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Long-term success of dialysis is, however, limited by a high rate of serious bacterial and viral infections. We compared T cell functions in ESRD patients undergoing haemodialysis (n = 20), or were not dialysed and received conventional medical treatment (n = 20).
