Background And Aim: Insulin is present in human milk, and oral insulin supplementation causes a dramatic adaptive gut growth in a rat model of short bowel syndrome (SBS). We conducted an open-label pilot observational study to examine whether oral insulin supplementation to paediatric patients with SBS decreases the need for parenteral nutrition (PN).
Methods: Between April 2004 and March 2006, 10 premature infants and children were recruited from 8 paediatric gastroenterology centres in Israel, Croatia, and Germany.
Purpose: To evaluate the clot-trapping ability, stability, and migration of a new low-profile, retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filter in an in-vitro model.
Materials And Methods: The SafeFlo IVC filter consists of two superelastic nitinol wires that form a double-ring platform and spiral filter. The filter is collapsed into a 5-6-F catheter and delivered into the IVC model.
We report a case of an infant delivered before the completion of 26 wks' gestation, weighing 300 g at birth, and treated with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation for respiratory distress syndrome. Her neurologic examination at 18 months of age is compatible with mild delay in gross and fine motor skills.

Neurodevelopmental outcome of infants born before 26 weeks gestation is perceived as very poor. As the result of recent reports, there have been calls for limitation of medical care for these infants.

Aim: To investigate sodium (NA(+)) potassium (K(+)) adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity in newborn infants at different gestational ages, to elucidate the mechanism underlying poor renal sodium conservation in preterm infants.
Methods: Fifty three healthy newborn infants, gestational age 30-42 weeks, were studied. Umbilical cord red blood cell Na(+) K(+)ATPase activity, plasma renin activity, and plasma aldosterone activities were measured in all of them.
