Potential use of Doppler perfusion index in detection of occult liver metastases from colorectal cancer.

Many clinical and preclinical studies demonstrated that measurements of liver hemodynamic [Doppler perfusion index (DPI)] may be used to accurately diagnose and predict liver metastases from primary colorectal cancer in a research setting. However, Doppler measurements have some serious limitations when applied to general population. Ultrasound is very operator-dependent, and requires skilled examiners.

Serum cytokine changes after gastric resection or gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Background/aims: Although essential for postoperative recovery, excessive surgical stress response leads to higher rate of serious postoperative complications, such as sepsis and multiple organ disorder syndrome. Exact regulation of surgical stress response is not yet known. Still, our ability to modify surgical stress response severity has led to diminished postoperative morbidity and mortality rates and development of fast-track surgery.

Surgical treatment of liver echinococcosis--the role of laparoscopy.

Background: The surgical approach to liver echinococcosis is still a controversial issue. This study shows our results of surgical treatment of liver hydatid cysts during a 5-year period.

Methods: A prospective study of 21 patients operated on in a 5-year period (1999-2003), in Dubrava University Hospital in Zagreb, Croatia, with hepatic hydatid cyst.

[Laparoscopic surgery in acute abdominal trauma].

In the past few years, laparoscopy has been increasingly used in patients with acute abdominal trauma. This metod in experienced hands enables direct eye visualisation of abdominal cavity, ensures accurate and early diagnosis and leads to prompt decision on the therapy. Reviewing the literature, laparoscopy in acute abdominal trauma is a safe and accurate procedure to yield diagnosis, enable laparoscopic interventions and help avoid unnecessary laparotomy.
