Induction of apoptosis of CD4+ T cells by immunomodulatory therapy of multiple sclerosis with glatiramer acetate.

Glatiramer acetate (GA), a mixture of synthetic polypeptides, has beneficial effects on the clinical course and the MRI-defined disease activity of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In MS, evidence has been provided that the apoptosis of disease-relevant T cells is dysregulated. In this study, we investigated the effect of GA on T cell apoptosis, T cell activation, and cytokine profile of lymphocytes derived from 19 relapsing-remitting MS patients during the first year of GA therapy.

Sonography of acute appendicitis in children: 7 years experience.

Objective: The objective of this prospective study was to determine the accuracy in diagnosing appendicitis in children by using high-resolution graded compression sonography.

Materials And Methods: During a 7-year period, 3859 children (mean age 9.9 years) with clinically suspected appendicitis were evaluated by sonography with the graded compression technique.

[Appendicitis in childhood].

From 1989 to 1995 high-resolution ultrasonography (US) was performed in 3,546 children (age: 1-17 years) with clinically suspected appendicitis. A total of 518 patients underwent laparotomy; 420 had histologically proven acute or perforated appendicitis (prevalence 11.8%).

[Blunt abdominal trauma in childhood. Value of conventional radiologic and ultrasound diagnosis].

In blunt abdominal trauma in children, the basic diagnostic work-up should include, in addition to history, physical examination, routine laboratory and X-ray studies, ultrasound and color Doppler ultrasonography. With these methods, most lesions can be identified both in the acute phase and in follow-up. They are also helpful to decide if surgery is indicated or if conservative management is justified.
