Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses and donkeys across 15 provinces in Bulgaria, testing 378 serum samples for antibodies using ELISA and confirming results with the virus neutralization test (VNT).
  • - Out of the samples tested, 9.26% were ELISA-positive for WNV, with a seroprevalence of 3.97% confirmed by VNT; no Usutu virus was detected in these animals.
  • - The research identified several risk factors for WNV seropositivity, including location, altitude, type of housing, and breed, suggesting that equids could serve as indicators for WNV and potential human case prediction in Bulgaria.

The virus discovered in 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China, which was later identified as SARS-CoV-2 and which spread to the level of a pandemic, put diagnostic methods to the test. Early in the pandemic, we developed a nested PCR assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, which we validated and applied to detect the virus in feline samples. The present study describes the application of the nested PCR test in parallel with LAMP for the detection of the virus in 427 nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal human samples taken between October 2020 and January 2022.

The union of aquaculture and hydroponics is named aquaponics-a system where microorganisms, fish and plants coexist in a water environment. Bacteria are essential in processes which are fundamental for the functioning and equilibrium of aquaponic systems. Such processes are nitrification, extraction of various macro- and micronutrients from the feed leftovers and feces, etc.

Haemophilus influenzae is one of the main bacteria responsible for otitis media (OM) among children worldwide. We aimed to estimate the distribution of encapsulated and non-capsulated variants (NTHi), biotypes, antibiotic susceptibility, and molecular epidemiology of H. influenzae isolates recovered from pediatric OM cases in Bulgaria.
