Bioluminescence is light produced by organisms through chemical reactions. In most cases, bioluminescent organisms produce light in response to mechanical stimulation, including from shear around objects moving in the water. Many phytoplankton and zooplankton are capable of producing bioluminescence, which is commonly measured as bioluminescence potential, defined as mechanically stimulated light measured inside of a chambered pump-through bathyphotometer.

The involvement of the hand flexors in trigger finger is not clear. This study aimed to examine the rigidity of the flexor tendon in the first pulley territory in the hand by using ultrasound in a healthy population, as well as to create a reference scale of rigidity for the flexor tendons to compare those values in trigger fingers. We tested 35 healthy volunteers using a linear ultrasound transducer and the color Doppler method.

Background: Cytokines are actively involved in the regulation of the inflammatory and immune responses and have crucial importance in the outcome of spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Examining more objective and representative indicators of the patient's condition is still required to reveal the fundamental patterns of the abovementioned posttraumatic processes, including the identification of changes in the expression of cytokines.

Methods: We performed a dynamic (3, 7, and 14 days post-injury (dpi)) extended multiplex analysis of cytokine profiles in both CSF and blood serum of SCI patients with baseline American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale grades of A.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to significant disabilities, and researchers are exploring the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) to promote recovery.
  • This study details an effective method for producing cytochalasin B-induced EVs through vortex mixing and filtration, aimed at enhancing their therapeutic use.
  • Results from testing repeated intrathecal injections of autologous MSC-derived EVs in pigs with contused SCI show promise in improving locomotor activity by supporting axon remyelination and nerve tissue reperfusion.

Background: Community-oriented primary health care is a health promotion model that includes community diagnosis of a targeted community.

Purpose: This educational project aimed to develop and implement an innovative approach of applying the principles of evidence-based practice in the teaching of community diagnosis, where the class of nursing students serves as an example of community.

Methods: The method consisted of a lecture and an evidence-based simulation of community diagnosis based on data collection regarding the lifestyle and health behaviors of third-year nursing students from a 4-year academic nursing program (200 students; 90% response rate).
