Nonfunctional mediastinal parathyroid cyst: imaging findings in two cases.

The authors describe the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of a 69-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man with a nonfunctional mediastinal parathyroid cyst. In the described cases, unenhanced CT showed homogeneous areas of water density, and unenhanced MRI showed homogeneous areas that were isointense to cerebrospinal fluid, reflecting their serous fluid contents. Both cysts were located posterior to the left lower pole of the thyroid gland with an extension to the superior mediastinum, either anterior or posterior to the left brachiocephalic vein.

[Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate forming a rectourethral fistula: a case report].

Eleven cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate have been previously reported in the Japanese medical literature. Patients with this type of carcinoma have dismal prognoses. Herein, we report a case in a 61-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital and whose chief complaints were dysuria and high fever.

The critical role of blood from HLA-homozygous donors in fatal transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease in immunocompetent patients.

Fatal transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease developed in a 69-year-old woman with colon cancer who underwent elective hemicolectomy. During the perioperative period, she was transfused with 4 units of nonirradiated fresh whole blood less than 6 hours after the blood was donated by family members. She was immunocompetent and was not treated with any immunosuppressive agents such as corticosteroids, chemotherapy, or irradiation therapy.

A 65-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with the chief complaint of gross hematuria and burning on urination. Cystoscopy revealed a papillary broad base tumor on right lateral and posterior wall. Barium enema showed a tumor of sigmoid colon.
