The purpose of the study was to examine the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) in the first 48 h of disease as well as the relationship of this biomarker with the severity of neurological symptoms of stroke. We studied 44 patients with acute IS. The control group consisted of 12 healthy volunteers.

A retrospective study included 100 cancer patients who had died of fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) in the postoperative period. Assessment of the hazard of fatal postoperative PE demonstrated that the risk peaked on day 7 after operation and later on gradually diminished. The first three postoperative weeks featured high risk of fatal PE development as 90% of deaths were registered during its course.

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 had a major ecological impact, with the bulk of the radioactive contamination affecting Belarus, the Ukraine and Russian Federation. Belarus has a nationwide general cancer registry that dates back to 1965, which allows a comparison of cancer incidence rates from before and after the accident. Preliminary analysis indicates that there has been an increased incidence of all cancers, with thyroid cancer accounting for most of that change.
