Article Synopsis
  • Increased blood pressure variability (BPV) in hemodialysis patients is linked to higher cardiovascular risks, particularly in those with intradialytic hypertension (IDH).
  • A study tested the effects of low (137 mEq/L) versus standard (140 mEq/L) dialysate sodium concentrations on BPV among 29 IDH patients through a crossover design.
  • Results showed that while mean blood pressure was lower with low sodium, BPV levels did not significantly differ between the two sodium concentrations, suggesting the need for further research into different interventions for managing BP and BPV in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with prior heart attacks at high ischemic risk and low bleeding risk may benefit from extending dual antiplatelet therapy beyond one year; this study compared the effects of ticagrelor versus prasugrel in such patients.
  • - In a randomized crossover study of 20 patients, ticagrelor (60 mg twice daily) showed significantly lower platelet reactivity (31.9 PRU) compared to prasugrel (5 mg once daily at 132.1 PRU).
  • - The results suggest that low-dose ticagrelor is more effective than low-dose prasugrel at reducing platelet reactivity in patients at increased risk for atherothrombosis after myocardial infarction.

Background And Purpose:  Cardioembolism is a postulated mechanism of embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). We investigated endothelial glycocalyx, aortic elastic properties, oxidative stress, and their association with left atrial (LA) function in ESUS and healthy individuals.

Methods:  In 90 ESUS patients (age 50.

Introduction: Ethanol lock solution has been mainly administered in paediatric and home parenteral nutrition patients in order to prevent catheter related blood stream infections (CRBSI). Its utility in hemodialysis (HD) patients with non-tunneled-uncuffed catheter (NTC) has been poorly explored.

Methods: We conducted a prospective randomized study in chronic HD patients requiring a newly inserted NTC-while awaiting for the maturation of an already established arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or arteriovenous graft (AVG) or tunneled-cuffed catheter insertion.

Background: Anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity typically presents as congestive heart failure (CHF). As immuno-inflammatory activation and apoptosis are important mechanisms in the process of heart failure, the use of biomarkers that could detect cardiovascular toxicity before the clinical presentation is of great importance. We studied whether sTNF-a, sTNF-RI, sTNF-RII, Fas/FasLigand system and NT-proBNP associate with early cardiac dysfunction in patients receiving cardiotoxic drugs.
