Article Synopsis
  • Many patients visit clinics or emergency departments with painful, swollen knees, making it crucial to quickly identify the cause for effective treatment options like osteopathic manipulation or surgery.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the impact of focused ultrasound training on first-year osteopathic medical students' ability to recognize normal knee anatomy and distinguish between three conditions: joint effusion, prepatellar bursitis, and cellulitis.
  • Results showed that most students had little prior experience with ultrasound, and a majority successfully completed the training and assessments, demonstrating improved diagnostic skills after the focused training.

Injuries caused by surgical incisions or traumatic lacerations compromise the structural and functional integrity of skin. Immediate approximation and robust repair of skin are critical to minimize occurrences of dehiscence and infection that can lead to impaired healing and further complication. Light-activated skin sealing has emerged as an alternative to sutures, staples, and superficial adhesives, which do not integrate with tissues and are prone to scarring and infection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to characterize subcutaneous fat thickness in a diverse group of patients using high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) and to explore its correlation with body image.
  • Women presented thicker subcutaneous fat than men across all measured areas, while Asian individuals had less fat in peripheral regions compared to Black and Other racial groups.
  • Findings could help clinicians in selecting patients for fat reduction treatments and managing conditions related to changes in fat thickness.
