The increasing consumption of medicines and the lack of efficient technologies in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can release pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) into any given river with the subsequent risk to the environment and human health. To assess the occurrence and transfer pathways of PhACs through the river ecosystem, 22 PhACs and one metabolite were analyzed in WWTPs, river sediments and fish collected alongside the Tagus River basin between 2020 and 2022. All the matrices presented at least two drugs being azithromycin the only one quantified in all of them.

Contact lens (CL) wear is a safe method for the correction of refractive errors. However, rare, severe ocular complications may occur which may lead to visual loss. As most of these complications are related to poor patient compliance with care and maintenance instructions, resulting in the contamination of hands, CLs and accessories, it was the purpose of this study to assess hand-washing habits in a sample of Spanish soft CL wearers.

Article Synopsis
  • Pesticide applications in agriculture create complex mixtures of Plant Protection Products (PPPs) in the environment, which may pose underestimated ecological risks that current regulations do not fully address.
  • This study presents a new methodology to identify priority PPPs for further ecotoxicological testing in edge-of-field water and sediment systems, based on actual quantification from European and Argentine case studies.
  • The research highlights discrepancies between EU risk assessment methods (ECHA vs. EFSA), with ECHA taking a more conservative approach, while EFSA offers a standardized strategy to avoid risk overestimations and provide a balanced view of PPP classes for mixture testing.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is the primary fat reservoir and energy source in fish. Other relevant fat depots include subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), located under epithelial layers, and intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), found between the myotomes. The present study investigates the morphological, gene expression and functional characteristics of these different depots in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
