While immunotyping blast cells from 45 patients with CML blast crisis, we detected 5 cases with immunologically primitive blast cells. The immunological phenotype of these cells corresponded to that of primitive stem cells which are characterized by expression of CD34 and HLA-DR antigens in the absence of other immunological markers. We suggest that blast cells from these patients may undergo differentiation similar to that of primitive stem cells that implies the existence of a new immunological variant of CML blast crisis, a primitive variant.

The site of the break of chromosome 22 was investigated by blot hybridization and polymerase chain reaction in 41 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). It is stated that the break site in various regions is not associated with the disease stage and clinicohematological manifestations in the time of the diagnosis. The break in the 5' subregion was indicative of longer survival than that in the subregion 3' patients.

Phenotyping of blood cells derived from 12 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in blast crisis with the use of Mab panel to differentiation antigens of human hemopoietic cells in a flow cytofluorimeter revealed heterogeneity of immunological phenotypes of blast cells. Subclones of blast cells were detected within each subset of disease at several successive stages of differentiation. The qualitative and quantitative composition of cell populations differing in immunological parameters is changed as a result of therapy given.
