Coagulation disorders and vascular diseases of the liver in patients with COVID-19.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global health emergency crisis, since its outbreak at the end of 2019. Although it mainly affects the respiratory system, it is documented that several important extrapulmonary manifestations exist in the context of the COVID-19 infection. Amongst the major pathophysiological mechanisms, the generation of a prothrombotic environment is increasingly recognized and is related to thromboembolic events.

Case Report: Intracranial Hypertension Secondary to Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a common cause of acute flaccid paralysis, is characterized by a rapidly progressive, usually symmetric weakness of the extremities. Headache and intracranial hypertension (ICHT) are very rare complications of GBS. Herein we report our current case of an obese girl with typical signs of GBS associated with autonomic dysfunction, cranial nerve deficits and increased intracranial pressure (ICP).

Comparison of digital color fundus imaging and fluorescein angiographic findings for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy in young type 1 diabetic patients.

Purpose: To compare the findings from digital 7-field color fundus (CF) photography and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) in young patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 1 without known diabetic retinopathy.

Methods: In this prospective, observational cohort study, 54 type 1 diabetic patients were recruited. Participants had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM) for at least 6 years, had Best Corrected Visual Acuity of 20/25 or better and did not have any known retinal pathology.

McCune-Albright syndrome: growth hormone and prolactin hypersecretion.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) has a special interest for endocrinologists as its pathogenesis results in hypersecretion of hormones in peripheral endocrine tissues. This can be expressed as precocious puberty, mainly in girls, primary hyperthyroidism, growth hormone (GH) and/or prolactin excess, hyperparathyroidism and hypercortisolism. The incidence of GH excess among patients with MAS has been assessed as up to 21%.

Growth hormone / insulin-like growth factor-1 axis during puberty.

Puberty is a dynamic, transitional period of life which is characterized by the acquisition of secondary sexual characteristics leading to the development of fertility. Puberty is accompanied by sexually dimorphic changes in linear growth, body proportions and body composition. The pubertal growth spurt is influenced by a number of factors such as hormones, nutrition, physical activity and general health, acting mostly in concert in order to modify a genetic potential for growth.
