Approximately 20% of patients with shingles develop postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). We investigated the role of gut microbiota in shingle- and PHN-related pain. Patients with shingles or PHN exhibited significant alterations in their gut microbiota with microbial markers predicting PHN development among patients with shingles.

Article Synopsis
  • Ginsenoside from Panax notoginseng has higher content and potential as a skin whitening agent compared to Panax ginseng, with research focusing on its effectiveness in inhibiting melanin production.* -
  • The study utilized zebrafish embryos and B16 cells to identify potent ginsenosides, specifically protopanaxtriol saponins (PTS), which showed strong inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase, linked to melanin synthesis.* -
  • PTS was successfully formulated into a gel using ethosomes, proving effective in reducing UVB-induced tanning in mice, suggesting its potential for safe skin whitening applications.*

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and its related pain are common challenges for patients receiving oxaliplatin chemotherapy. Oxaliplatin accumulation in dorsal root ganglion (DRGs) is known to impair gene transcription by epigenetic dysregulation. We hypothesized that sodium butyrate, a pro-resolution short-chain fatty acid, inhibited histone acetylation in DRGs and abolished K channel dysregulation-induced neuronal hyperexcitability after oxaliplatin treatment.

It is unclear how cells counteract the potentially harmful effects of uncoordinated DNA replication in the context of oncogenic stress. Here, we identify the WRAD (WDR5/RBBP5/ASH2L/DPY30) core as a modulator of DNA replication in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) models. Molecular analyses demonstrated that the WRAD core interacts with the replisome complex, with disruption of DPY30 resulting in DNA re-replication, DNA damage, and chromosomal instability (CIN) without affecting cancer cell proliferation.

Background: Breast reconstruction following mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer restores form and enhances patient satisfaction. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 aimed to impact trends in breast reconstruction, but recent information regarding racial and ethnic disparities is lacking.

Methods: We analyzed National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) data spanning 2005-2022 to investigate the impact of ACA on racial and ethnic diversity in immediate breast reconstruction post-mastectomy.
