[Genetic characterization of pathogenic Borrelia, group A14S, isolated in Ukraine].

Borrelia Ir-5215, isolated from ticks Ixodes ricinus in Ukraine (the Crimean autonomous region), was identified by the method of the polymorphism of the fragment length of the restriction amplicon of rRNA spacer region 5S-23S. Its Msel-restriction profile was relatively similar to that of B. afzelii.

[Results of the 20-year study of tick-borne encephalitis in Crimea].

The history of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) study in the Crimea was retraced and the possibility of introduction of TBE virus to the Crimea in the process of the acclimatization of vertebrates from areas enzootic for TBE is discussed. The foci of TBE were found throughout the whole of the mountain forest zone of the Crimea and coincided with the habitat area of lxodes ricinus, the main vector of TBE. [The epizootic characteristics of tularemia in the Crimea].

Cases of tularemia were registered in the Crimea both before and after planned immunization. In 1981-1993 in 4.000 localities 35,100 mammals, 27,400 ectoparasites, 8,800 feces left by birds of prey and foxes and 900 environmental specimens were studied.

[The significance of exacerbations of lung diseases in the development of chronic cor pulmonale and their treatment].

In 61 patients, pulmonary tuberculosis was complicated by thrombosis of the pulmonary artery or its embolism and by bronchial asthma. In various lung diseases, there was a combination of some factors predisposing to chronic cor pulmonale. These included specific infection, sympathoadrenal activation, reduced capillaries, and hypoxia in pulmonary tuberculosis, alveolar hypoventilation with arteriolar spasms, and elevated intrathoracic pressure in bronchial asthma; higher pulmonary arterial systolic pressure due to spasms of the pulmonary branches and drastically reduced arterial bed in pulmonary thromboembolism.
