Appropriateness of Use of Streptococcal Pharyngitis Testing and Associated Antibiotic Prescribing in the Urgent Care Setting.

The primary objective was to evaluate Group A streptococcal (GAS) tests performed with a Modified Centor Criteria (MCC) Score < 3 at Urgent Care Clinics (UCC). Secondary objectives included evaluating the MCC sensitivity and specificity, antibiotics prescribed with an MCC score < 3, and association between palatal petechiae and GAS pharyngitis infections. This was a retrospective review from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, of Rapid Antigen Detection Tests (RADTs) on patients with ICD codes associated with pharyngitis.

C-reactive protein - My perspective on its first half century, 1930-1982.

C-reactive protein (CRP) was discovered in 1930 in the sera of patients during the acute phase of pneumococcal pneumonia and was so named because it bound to the C-polysaccharide of the pneumococcal cell wall. During the next half century many questions raised by this discovery were answered. Phosphorylcholine was found to be the moiety of the C-polysaccharide to which CRP bound.

HLA B27 in Ankylosing Spondylitis: Differences in Frequency and Relative Risk in American Blacks and Caucasians.

Twenty-eight HLA alleles of the A and B loci were determined in 23 American Blacks and 50 Caucasians with primary ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The prevalence of HLA B27 was significantly increased in American Black patients (48 per cent) Black controls (two per cent), but was much less than the 94 per cent found in Caucasian patients (controls eight per cent).
