The mature skeletons of hard corals, termed stony or scleractinian corals, are made of aragonite (CaCO). During their formation, particles attaching to the skeleton's growing surface are calcium carbonate, transiently amorphous. Here we show that amorphous particles are observed frequently and reproducibly just outside the skeleton, where a calicoblastic cell layer envelops and deposits the forming skeleton.

Context: The type of dietary protein may modulate markers of diabetic kidney disease; however, no attempt to summarize the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has been performed to date.

Objectives: Present-day diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is often established in the early stages where clinical signs and physical examination findings typically associated with the disease may not yet be present. The purpose of this study was to investigate thyroid palpation score (TPS), total thyroxine (T4), body weight, body condition score and a clinical scoring index, which assesses severity of illness and quality of life, in untreated hyperthyroid cats, healthy cats and cats with non-thyroidal illness.

Methods: Fifty-five cats with hyperthyroidism, 45 healthy cats and 327 euthyroid cats with non-thyroidal disease were prospectively enrolled.

Background: Previous controlled studies on the effect of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) - namely the use of facemasks and intensified hand hygiene - in preventing household transmission of influenza have not produced definitive results. We aimed to investigate efficacy, acceptability, and tolerability of NPI in households with influenza index patients.

Methods: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial during the pandemic season 2009/10 and the ensuing influenza season 2010/11.

Recognizing the focal role of the CNS and stress in the pathogenesis of chronic facial dermatitis, the author hypothesized that the main responsibility for the persistence of CFD lies in the parasympathetic portion of the CNS. The validity of this hypothesis is challenged with organ specific treatments, leading to the resolution of parasympathetic stress and CFD.
