In the ongoing Anthropocene era, air quality monitoring constitutes a primary axis of European and international policies for all sectors, including Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs). Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) with proper sensing equipment provide an edge technology for air quality and odor monitoring. In addition, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry has been used in civil engineering, environmental (water) quality assessment and lately for industrial facilities monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • Modern societies are increasingly interested in reusing waste, particularly focusing on treated sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in the context of a circular economy.
  • This study investigates biosolids collected from four urban WWTPs in Western Greece, employing various analytical techniques to characterize their composition.
  • Results show that these biosolids contain valuable metals and organic matter, making them suitable for use as fertilizers in agriculture.

Unlabelled: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) a pandemic. Countries all over the world imposed restriction measures, in an attempt to limit the expansion of the pandemic. Provided that human activities in large urban areas affect air quality, we studied the concentrations of gaseous pollutants ΝΟ, ΝΟ, O, CH, and particulate matter PM in the air, through gas pollution measuring stations in the center of Athens (Greek capital), the center of Piraeus (Greece's largest port), Athens International Airport (most international and domestic flights within Greece).

Over the past three decades, environmental concerns about the water pollution have been raised on societal and industrial levels. The presence of pollutants stemming from cosmetic products has been documented in wastewater streams outflowing from industrial as well as wastewater treatment plants. To this end, a series of consistent measures should be taken to prevent emerging contaminants of water resources.

The simultaneous requirement to manage resources and wastes in more rational way has meant that many communities worldwide have begun to search for long-term alternative solutions. Reuse and recovery of biosolids is considered to be a constant solution of circular sustainability, as waste disposal without further reuse background like fertilizer is no longer an alternative to be promoted. There have been developed many treatment methods over the years for the stabilization and sanitization of biosolids.
