Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation from cytokines, especially IL-6, is linked to increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, particularly in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, but the impact of IL-6 inhibitors like tocilizumab on CVD is unclear.
  • A study of 45 RA patients on long-term tocilizumab therapy showed no significant increase in cardiovascular risk or structural changes in carotid arteries, and cholesterol levels remained stable for those not on statins.
  • For patients on statins, there were significant improvements in cholesterol metrics, including a 43% increase in beneficial HDL-C and reductions in total cholesterol and atherogenicity, with associations found between cholesterol changes and inflammation markers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate the frequency and risk factors for diastolic dysfunction (DD) in patients with calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition disease (CPPD) and osteoarthritis (OA), finding a high prevalence of DD among participants.
  • - Among 26 patients without cardiovascular diseases, DD was detected in 19 individuals, with similar rates of type 1 LV and RV DD in both CPPD and OA groups, while types 2 and 3 DD were not present.
  • - Significant differences in certain cardiac indices were observed between the two groups, with higher levels of inflammation (CRP) noted in CPPD patients, highlighting complex relationships between diastolic function and various health factors in CPPD and OA. *

Background: Calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition disease (CPPD) may be associated with developing of diastolic dysfunction (DD).

Aim: To determine the variability of echocardiographic parameters in patients with CPPD receiving anti-inflammatory therapy.

Materials And Methods: Twenty six patients with CPPD and osteoarthritis (OA) from 18 to 65 years old were included in the case-control study.

Aim: To evaluate the detection rate of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with low cardiovascular risk (CVR).

Materials And Methods: The study included 182 RA patients with low CVR (mSCORE<1%) and no established cardiovascular diseases and a control group comprising 100 people. Atherosclerotic lesion of the carotid arteries was assessed using Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries and was determined by the detection of atherosclerotic plaque (ASP) - the local increase in the thickness of the intima-media complex (IMT) >1.

The Orchidaceae, which is one of the most interesting families of angiosperms, contains a large number of rare species. Despite their acknowledged importance, little attention has been paid to the study of orchids distributed in northern territories. In this study, we determined the syntaxonomical diversity and ecological parameters of orchid habitats in two of Europe's largest protected areas, the Pechoro-Ilychsky Reserve and the Yugyd Va National Park (northeastern European Russia), and then compared our findings to those in other parts of orchid distribution ranges.
