Emergency department ophthalmoscopy: physician confidence and clinical practices.

Objectives: Fundoscopy is crucial in the emergency department to identify or rule out serious ocular and neurological conditions. Despite its clinical importance, fundoscopy is often omitted due to the technical challenges associated with traditional direct ophthalmoscopy, particularly for non-ophthalmologists. This study examines emergency physicians' practices, confidence levels, and training related to various modalities of fundoscopy including traditional direct ophthalmoscopes, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes, panoptic ophthalmoscopes, slit lamp fundoscopy and fundus cameras; and explores the potential role of alternative modalities, such as fundus cameras, in Canadian emergency departments.

Single Dose of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate Versus Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate in Hospitalized Patients With Hyperkalemia.

Background: Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) is an inorganic zirconium silicate compound that selectively exchanges potassium for hydrogen and sodium. "Once" doses of SZC (with option to redose) in patients with hyperkalemia in hospitalized settings have not been evaluated. We hypothesized that a once dose of SZC would be non-inferior to sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) in reducing serum potassium.

Early Experience With Tenecteplase at a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Purpose Of Review: Tenecteplase has been studied and recommended as an alternative thrombolytic agent in patients with acute stroke. A brief review of clinical trials and guidelines pertinent to our clinical decision algorithm is described. This is followed by operational steps that were made to create and implement a clinical pathway based on available evidence in which tenecteplase is used in select patients with stroke at our comprehensive stroke center.

Leadership during a Crisis: Observations by Emerging Leaders during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During crises, leaders must address fear, give people a role and purpose and emphasize experimentation, learning and self-care. A survey of emerging health leaders rated the frequency with which they observed their organizational leaders and themselves engage in these crisis leadership functions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings revealed significant differences between emerging and more experienced leaders' behaviours in acknowledging fears and providing reassurance, managing individual health and role modelling good self-care and encouraging others to practise good self-care.

An Innovative Model for Healthcare Leadership Education.

A key goal of programs in health management, policy and research is to transform students into effective leaders. Academic experience can impart knowledge about the skills or competencies required but may not be sufficient to transform students into leaders of health system change.
