Free-standing, binder-free, and conductive additive-free mesoporous titanium dioxide/carbon hybrid electrodes were prepared from co-assembly of a poly(isoprene)-block-poly(styrene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer and a titanium alkoxide. By tailoring an optimized morphology, we prepared macroscopic mechanically stable 300 μm thick monoliths that were directly employed as lithium-ion battery electrodes. High areal mass loading of up to 26.

Free-standing, binder-free, titanium-niobium oxide/carbon hybrid nanofibers are prepared for Li-ion battery applications. A one-pot synthesis offers a significant reduction of processing steps and avoids the use of environmentally unfriendly binder materials, making the approach highly sustainable. Tetragonal Nb O /C and monoclinic Ti Nb O /C hybrid nanofibers synthesized at 1000 °C displayed the highest electrochemical performance, with capacity values of 243 and 267 mAh g , respectively, normalized to the electrode mass.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising salt removal technology with high energy efficiency when applied to low molar concentration aqueous electrolytes. As an interfacial process, ion electrosorption during CDI operation is sensitive to the pore structure and the total pore volume of carbon electrodes limits the maximum salt adsorption capacity (SAC). Thus, activation of carbons as a widely used method to enhance the porosity of a material should also be highly attractive for improving SAC values.

The development of micro- and nanostructured surfaces which improve the cell-substrate interaction is of great interest in today's implant applications. In this regard, Al/Al2O3 bi-phasic nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition of the molecular precursor (tBuOAlH2)2. Heat treatment of such bi-phasic nanowires with short laser pulses leads to micro- and nanostructured Al2O3 surfaces.
