Sarcopenia is a progressive generalized skeletal muscle disease that is accompanied by an accelerated loss of muscle mass and function, affecting the quality of life and the ability to perform self-care. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the world today ranges from 10 to 25%, which represents a certain danger as it is a prognostic factor for possible injury and increased disability in the elderly population. Sarcopenia often accompanies a large number of different diseases, including neurodegenerative ones, so it is actively studied in this category of patients, for example, as one of the early symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe report a non-ambulatory 13-year-old boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who experienced severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and cerebral fat embolism following elective soft tissue surgery. Post-surgery radiological examination revealed bilateral femoral fractures and marked osteopenia that were believed to have caused disseminated pulmonary and cerebral fat embolism. The patient had never been on glucocorticoid treatment.

The study showed the stability of obtained layered TiO-anatase close to 1200 °C. This research confirmed for the first time that the transition of mesocrystalline anatase to the rutile phase occurs between 1000 °C and 1200 °C, which is more than 400 °C higher than the transition of bulk TiO due to the used precursor.

Objective: To study a role of vitamin D and other indicators of calcium-phosphorus metabolism as possible predictors of Parkinson's disease (PD).
Material And Methods: The main group consisted of 138 patients with PD, the control group included 79 patients without PD. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) were determined by chemo-luminescence immunoassay.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, and represents the most common cause of dementia. In this study, we performed several different analyses to detect loci involved in development of the late onset AD in the Russian population. DNA samples from 472 unrelated subjects were genotyped for 63 SNPs using iPLEX Assay and real-time PCR.
