Background: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with stage IIIB/IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) enrolled in first-line chemotherapy trials conducted by our group with respect to receiving or not receiving subsequent treatment.
Patients And Methods: Data were collected from 634 patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC treated with platinum and nonplatinum agent-based first-line regimens. Patient survival was calculated from the day of registration to first-line chemotherapy trials (OS1) as well as from the day of first-line treatment failure or the initiation of second-line chemotherapy (OS2) until death.
In the literature there are indications of associations between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in inflammatory bowel disease and disease activity, psychological status, coping, stressful life events, and social support. The aim of this study was to examine whether a relation exists between quality of health care and HRQoL, taking possible confounding variables into account. For this purpose, one single questionnaire was compiled from existing validated questionnaires.

A total of 147 evaluable, pretreated patients, with NSCLC, received either gemcitabine (1000 mg m(-2), days 1 and 8)+CPT-11 (300 mg m(-2), day 8) (Group A, n=76) or CPT-11 (300 mg m(-2), day 1) (Group B, n=71), every 3 weeks. All patients were evaluable for response and toxicity.

A health questionnaire survey of all adults suffering from beta-thalassaemia major receiving treatment on the Island of Crete, Greece was carried out with the aim of ascertaining the factors that are associated with their attitudes and expectations. The responses of 67 of the 72 patients, aged 18-45 years, were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis to extract three component indicators (Adaptability, Optimism and Pessimism Indicators), which reflected their attitudes towards life and two component indicators (Healing and Therapy Indicators) that reflected their expectations from life.
