In 1930 Gilbert Brown was prominent in the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association and instrumental in the establishment of a Section of Anaesthetics. He was elected the first President of this scientifically and academically orientated section. He became the first President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists from 1934-1939.
