Inhibin B in men with severe obesity and after weight reduction following gastroplasty.

Although the effect of obesity on some gonadal functions in men is known, its effect on Sertoli cell function has not been reported. We tested the hypothesis that the serum inhibin B level is decreased in men with severe obesity, and that this change persists after significant weight loss. We measured gonadal hormones in 17 obese men before (baseline) and after weight reduction following silastic ring vertical gastroplasty (SRVG).

Background: Stab wounds to the gluteal area are a frequent injury in an urban trauma centre. These injuries may appear innocuous but is potentially life threatening. Therefore they deserve timely evaluation and management.

Anesthesia for restrictive bariatric surgery (gastric bypass not included): laparoscopic vs open procedures.

Unlabelled: Publications regarding anesthetic management for weight reduction surgery are scarce. We reviewed the records of 234 patients who underwent bariatric restrictive procedures (gastric bypass not included) from May 1999 to September 2000. Variables analyzed included demographics, anesthetic data and perioperative course.

Dynamic radioisotope scintigraphy for gastric banding adjustment.

Background: Gastric banding is today a common restrictive procedure to treat morbid obesity. After operation, adjustment of the band is required to adequately restrict food intake, allowing better results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of a unique method of adjustment using dynamic radioisotope scintigraphy.

Laparoscopic repair of "sportsman's hernia" in soccer players as treatment of chronic inguinal pain.

Background: To evaluate the clinical course of soccer players affected by chronic groin pain, who were referred for laparoscopic inguinal exploration.

Material/methods: Thirty-five professional soccer players affected by chronic groin pain and referred for laparoscopic inguinal exploration were included in this prospective, non-randomized study. Prior to surgery, patients were assessed by history, clinical examination, pelvic X-ray, bone scanning with Technetium and ultrasound of the inguinal region.
