Pectus excavatum and carinatum: a narrative review of epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and classification.

Background And Objective: A wide variety of congenital chest wall deformities that manifest in infants, children and adolescents exists, among which are pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. Numerous studies have been conducted over the years aiming to better understand these deformities. This report provides a brief overview of what is currently known about the epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, and classification of these deformities, and highlights the gaps in knowledge.

Central Cord Syndrome After Fall From Inversion Table.

Introduction: Central cord syndrome, the most common incomplete traumatic spinal cord injury, often results in functional impairment with variable recovery.

Case Presentation: Central cord syndrome developed in a 64-year-old man during routine home use of an inversion table.

Discussion: The incidence of central cord syndrome, which occurs most frequently after a fall, is increasing among older persons.

Preoperative imaging of clinically relevant intrathoracic abnormalities in pectus excavatum patients.

Background: Preoperative radiological imaging in pectus excavatum sometimes coincidentally yields additional intrathoracic abnormalities. In the context of a larger research project investigating replacement of CT scans by 3D-surface scanning as routine preoperative work-up for pectus excavatum, this study aims to quantify the incidence of clinically relevant intrathoracic abnormalities found incidentally using conventional CT in pectus excavatum patients.

Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted including pectus excavatum patients, receiving CT between 2012 and 2021 as part of their preoperative evaluation.

The transition process of release from prisons into the community is associated with high risks for users of opioids. Especially in the first 10-14 days in freedom, the risk of drug-related overdoses is extremely high, in the worst case with lethal outcome. There are two main medical strategies for the target group: on the one hand, medication-assisted treatment before, during and after incarceration, and on the other hand, edcuation about and acccess to naloxone as an antidote in case of opioid-related overdose.

[Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation in Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection after Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation - First Experience].

Aim:  With the emergence of a new virus and the associated pandemic, the ICU started to see a brand new kind of patient with severe ARD. As with any disease, sometimes the discontinuation of mechanical ventilation for any reason can be difficult. As a center specializing in weaning patients after prolonged mechanical ventilation, we wanted to compare our results with weaning patients who had prolonged mechanical ventilation for other reasons than those of patients who had prolonged mechanical ventilation due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
