Article Synopsis
  • - ACLF (Acute-on-chronic liver failure) is a serious condition where chronic liver disease suddenly worsens, leading to multiple organ failure and higher mortality rates.
  • - In about 40-50% of ACLF cases, the exact cause is unknown, but it may involve bacterial translocation and systemic inflammation; the other half often relates to sepsis, alcohol use, or reactivation of viral hepatitis.
  • - Treating ACLF focuses on preventing triggers for liver decompensation, supporting vital functions, managing complications, assessing prognosis, and considering liver transplantation.

Background: The association of chronic heart failure (CHF) and iron deficiency (ID) with or without anemia is frequently encountered in current medical practice and has a negative prognostic impact, worsening patients' exercise capacity and increasing hospitalization costs. Moreover, anemia is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and CHF, an association known as cardio-renal anemia syndrome (CRAS) possessing a significantly increased risk of death.

Aim: This review aims to provide an illustrative survey on the impact of ID in CHF patients-based on physiopathological traits, clinical features, and the correlation between functional and absolute ID with CHF-and the benefit of iron supplementation in CHF.

Among the most widespread childhood infections, () develops potentially life-threatening conditions in adults if not appropriately treated. Helicobacter pylori is a common human pathogen that was first described in the stomach many years ago. The discovery of was crucial in gastroenterology; this bacterium is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and lymphoid tissue lymphoma related to the gastric mucosa.

Article Synopsis
  • - COVID-19 pneumonia is a significant medical challenge due to its contagious nature, high rates of illness and death, and the limitations of healthcare systems in managing it.
  • - While most research has focused on diagnosing COVID-19 pneumonia and its common look-alikes, there is a gap in studies addressing rarer alternative diagnoses and overlaps with pre-existing lung diseases.
  • - Effective radiological evaluation, particularly using high-resolution computed tomography (HRTC), and a team-based approach are essential for accurate diagnosis, guiding treatment, and optimizing healthcare resource allocation.

One of the several classes of novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) that present analytical challenges for forensic chemists is benzodiazepines. Like other NPS classes, the emergence of new compounds within this class continues, creating a need for the development of new techniques and methods that allow for rapid detection and identification of these compounds in forensics laboratories. This work investigates the use of thermal desorption direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (TD-DART-MS) as a tool for the rapid and sensitive detection of benzodiazepines.
