The aim of this study was to evaluate the early effects of high and low-osmolar contrast media on glomerular function in rats by using a new method based on the measurement of the urinary excretion of 99mTc-DTPA. Renal artery embolism is not a rare occurrence, especially in patients with valvular heart disease, but the early diagnosis of this condition is infrequently accomplished. We report the clinical and laboratory data of 2 patients with valvular heart disease who presented with unilateral renal artery embolization. The usefulness of the determination of serum and urinary enzymes and renal function tests is discussed.
