Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in Romania to assess iodine levels in schoolchildren and neonates after 20 years of mandatory iodized salt use, involving 1352 children and 18,349 neonates for data collection.
  • The results indicated that the median urinary iodine concentration (mUIC) in schoolchildren was adequate, with 62% of households using iodized salt; however, neonates showed a concerning 14.7% of high TSH levels, highlighting potential iodine deficiency in pregnant women.
  • The conclusion emphasizes the need for improved iodized salt usage (currently below the recommended 90%) and greater public awareness regarding the health impacts of iodine deficiency, particularly for children's development.

Objective: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is one of the common preventable causes of intellectual disability in neonates, by early detection through neonatal screening. We present the 8-year experience of the National Institute for Mother and Child Health (INSMC) in using MEDILOG national registry for the neonatal screening of CH.

Methods: Neonatal screening for CH, done by TSH measurement in dried blood spot, is organized in 5 regional centers, each with a reference laboratory.

Purpose: To investigate the role of reference height inter-test variability upon the variability of the stereometric parameters.

Materials And Method: 204 glaucomatous patients underwent a complete ophthalmological exam, including Heidelberg Retina Tomography 3 (HRT-3). The exclusion criteria were optic disc or retinal pathology that might interfere with the detection of glaucoma progression, TSD >30μm.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "I Ardeleanu"

  • - I Ardeleanu's research primarily focuses on public health topics, emphasizing iodine status in Romania, particularly in relation to mandatory salt iodization and its effects on schoolchildren and neonates over the past two decades
  • - The recent examination of iodine levels revealed discordant results, highlighting a concerning iodine deficiency status in schoolchildren despite the implementation of iodization policies, while neonatal screening indicates adequate levels in a majority of cases
  • - In addition to studies on iodine status, Ardeleanu has researched congenital hypothyroidism screening in neonates and complications in glaucoma progression analysis, indicating a broad interest in preventive health measures and accurate diagnostic methodologies!*
