Rhabdomyolysis: another complication after prolonged surgery.

We present the case of a young patient who underwent a prolonged urological procedure in the lateral decubitus position. The patient's postoperative course was complicated by rhabdomyolysis manifested by elevated levels of serum creatine phosphokinase and the presence of myoglobin in urine and blood. To prevent renal failure, we managed the patient in the intensive care unit with generous volumes of intravenous fluids, forced diuresis, and urine alkalization.

[Genetically transformed plant roots as a model for studying specific metabolism and symbiotic contacts of the root system].

Genetic transformation of plants mediated by Ri plasmid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes occupies a special place in plant cell engineering, since this technique based on a natural phenomenon allows cultivation of separately growing roots on hormone-free media. Application of wild-type unmodified agrobacterial strains allows us to obtain root cultures capable of long-term growth in vitro due to an increased sensitivity of the cells to auxins while other biochemical properties remain unaltered. A collection of pRi T-DNA transformed roots of certain dicotyledons was constructed; some strains of it are used to study synthesis of secondary metabolites in root cells.

Specific accumulation and revised structures of acridone alkaloid glucosides in the tips of transformed roots of Ruta graveolens.

The root tips of Ruta graveolens (common rue) show strong autofluorescence of acridone alkaloids, which are characteristic secondary metabolites of this plant. To study the specific distribution and accumulation of acridone alkaloids in various root segments of Ruta graveolens, root material was harvested from genetically transformed root cultures and extracts were investigated by chromatographic techniques and HPLC-(1)H NMR spectroscopy. The cells of the elongation and differentiation zones contained acridone glucosides and large amounts of acridone alkaloids, mainly rutacridone.

Resource selection for an interdisciplinary field: a methodology.

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library of the University of Maryland developed and implemented a methodology to evaluate print and digital resources for social work. Although this methodology was devised for the interdisciplinary field of social work, the authors believe it may lend itself to resource selection in other interdisciplinary fields. The methodology was developed in response to the results of two separate surveys conducted in late 1999, which indicated improvement was needed in the library's graduate-level social work collections.

Effects of vasoactive substances released from ischemic reperfused liver on the isolated rat heart.

Background: Cardiovascular dysfunction frequently occurs after major vascular surgery or liver transplantation.

Objective: To evaluate the effects on myocardial activity of vasoactive agents released from ischemic-reperfused liver.

Animals And Methods: Isolated rat livers were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution (KH), propranolol 10(-5) M, losartan 2x10(-5) M and indomethacin 10(-5) M, then made globally ischemic for 120 min (37 degrees C) and reperfused.
