Article Synopsis
  • - Milk contamination, particularly from Shiga toxin-producing non-O157 STEC strains, poses significant public health risks, especially in areas like Kwara State, Nigeria, where data on this issue is limited.
  • - The study examined 18 non-O157 STEC isolates from 1,225 milk samples, revealing four novel sequence types and five serotypes that carry various virulence and resistance factors.
  • - Findings of this research underline the need for better hygiene in milk handling and inform public health policies to enhance food safety standards in the region.

The paucity of information on the genomic diversity of drug-resistant bacteria in most food-producing animals, including poultry in Nigeria, has led to poor hazard characterization and the lack of critical control points to safeguard public health. Hence, this study used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to assess the presence and the diversity of antibiotic resistance genes, mobile genetic elements, virulence genes, and phages in Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase producing Escherichia coli (ESBL - E. coli) isolates obtained from poultry via the EURL guideline of 2017 in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Objectives: The occurrence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in poultry poses the public health threat of zoonotic transmission to humans. Hence, this study assessed the occurrence of drug-resistant Escherichia coli in broilers in the largest live bird market in Kwara State, Nigeria in December 2020.

Methods: Presumptive E.

During microbial assessment of cow milk cheese products in the city of Ilorin, Nigeria, a -like isolate was detected that could not be assigned to any known species. Whole-genome sequence analyses against all currently known 26 species confirmed that this isolate constitutes a new taxon within the genus , with highest similarity to (average nucleotide identity blast of 82.66%, DNA-DNA hybridization of 28.
