The partial DNA sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia canis and the 16S rRNA gene of Ehrlichia canis detected in dogs from Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, were compared to sequences from other strains deposited in GenBank. The E. canis strain circulating in Ribeirão Preto is identical to other strains previously detected in the region, whereas the subspecies Babesia canis vogeli is the main Babesia strain circulating in dogs from Ribeirão Preto.

In December 2000, the Italian Registry of Laparoscopic Surgery of the Spleen (IRLSS) was formally launched under the auspices of the Italian Society for Endoscopic Surgery and New Technologies (SICE). The aim of this multicentre study was to analyse various aspects of the treatment that are still under discussion, such as the extension of the laparoscopic indications in cases of malignancy, independently of the associated splenomegaly, patient selection and operative techniques. A retrospective review of 379 patients undergoing laparoscopic splenectomy for haematological diseases from February 1, 1993, to September 15, 2005, was conducted.

Morgagni-Larrey's hernias are congenital diaphragmatic hernias, rarely observed and generally identified accidentally due to the lack of symptoms. The authors report a case of intestinal occlusion secondary to Morgagni-Larrey herniation in an adult recently observed and underline the aetiopathogenic aspects, the diagnostic tools and the clinical pattern. They suggest to consider surgical repair as a choice of treatment, also for asymptomatic patients.

The authors report a recently examined rare case of isolated perforated diverticulum of the transverse colon. At surgery, a perforated omentum-sealed diverticulum was found in the third distal wall of the transverse colon. A diverticulectomy was performed.
