Purpose: The use of advanced energy devices for mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection can reduce perioperative blood loss, seroma formation, and drainage duration/volume. Retraction using fiberoptic retractors can help visualize deep and narrow surgical fields. We aimed to compare the postoperative outcomes between single-incision breast-conserving surgery (SIBCS) and conventional breast-conserving surgery (CBCS) with axillary staging using advanced energy devices and conventional equipment, respectively.

This study investigates the molecular characteristics and therapeutic implications of the BRCA1 L1780P mutation, a rare variant prevalent among Korean hereditary breast cancer patients. Using patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models and cell lines (PDX-derived cell line) from carriers, sequencing analyses revealed loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at the BRCA1 locus, with one patient losing the wild-type allele and the other mutated allele. This reversion mutation may cf.

Importance: While nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) for breast cancer was only performed using the open method in the past, its frequency using endoscopic and robotic surgical instruments has been increasing rapidly. However, there are limited studies regarding postoperative complications and the benefits and drawbacks of minimal access NSM (M-NSM) compared with conventional NSM (C-NSM).

Objective: To examine the differences in postoperative complications between C-NSM and M-NSM.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of micrometastases in axillary lymph nodes after neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) in breast cancer patients, aiming to understand their impact on prognosis.
  • Among 978 analyzed patients, 9.1% had micrometastases, showing a higher prevalence of additional metastases compared to those without node involvement.
  • The findings suggest that while micrometastases do not affect recurrence-free survival, they are linked to worse outcomes, indicating that further axillary lymph node dissection may be necessary for affected patients.

  • Despite 20 years of awareness, cascade genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is underused among at-risk relatives due to various psychosocial factors.
  • A review of studies from 2012-2022 identified 3 main categories and 12 subcategories of facilitators and barriers to testing: facilitators (like family support), bidirectional factors (like perceptions and emotions), and barriers (like negative family reactions).
  • Healthcare providers should evaluate these factors to enhance family communication about genetic testing and promote informed decision-making.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the feasibility of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) after neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST) in breast cancer patients with high nodal involvement.
  • A total of 388 patients were analyzed, and outcomes were compared based on MRI responses and cancer subtypes, specifically focusing on hormone receptor-positive HER2- and HER2+/triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC).
  • Results indicated that SLNB is reliable for evaluating nodal status in patients with complete MRI responses, particularly among HER2+ and TNBC patients, with notably low false-negative rates.

Purpose: The gene expression test (GET) was used to predict the response to chemotherapy and the recurrence risk. Several randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that some patients with node-positive disease can achieve favorable survival outcomes even without adjuvant chemotherapy. This study aimed to predict the results of Oncotype DX (Genomic Health) and MammaPrint (Agendia) using traditional clinicopathological factors.

Background: Axillary evaluation is unnecessary for pure ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS); however, it is performed because of the risk of upstaging to invasive cancer. We assessed the role of intraoperative frozen section (IOF) biopsy in reducing invasive cancer upstaging and axillary evaluation in preoperative DCIS patients.

Methods: We reviewed patients with preoperative DCIS who underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) with IOF biopsy.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is used to improve cosmetic outcomes while maintaining oncological safety in patients with early breast cancer; however, NSM requires a higher level of skill and workload than mastectomy and is associated with long, visible scars. Robotic surgical systems reduce surgeon workload and facilitate precise surgery. Considering the increasing support of robot-assisted NSM (RNSM), this paper aims to discuss the current controversies based on the research findings reported thus far.
