Ixeris dentata (ID) is an herbal medicine used in Asian countries to treat indigestion, pneumonia, hepatitis, contusions, and tumors; however, its effect on intestinal inflammation is unknown. Thus, we investigated the effect of ID in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) model of colitis in female BALB/c mice; animals were evaluated after seven days of DSS treatment. DSS-treated mice showed considerable clinical signs, including weight loss, reduced colon length, colonic epithelial injury, infiltration of inflammatory cells in the colon tissue, and upregulation of inflammatory mediators.

Osteoclasts are the principal bone-resorbing cells that are responsible for bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, tumor-induced osteolysis, and metastatic cancers. In this study, we investigated the effect of GNF-2 on osteoclast development induced by RANKL and M-CSF.

Materials And Methods: From Jan 2003 to Nov 2011, 35 patients omitting preoperative or postoperative RT for pT3N0 lower rectal cancer were included. We defined the lower rectal cancer as the tumor with the inferior margin located below the virtual line-a convergent level between rectal wall and levator ani muscle.

Administration of metformin is known to reduce both body weight and food intake. Although the hypothalamus is recognized as a critical regulator of energy balance and body weight, there is currently no evidence for an effect of metformin in the hypothalamus. Therefore, we sought to determine the central action of metformin on energy balance and body weight, as well as its potential involvement with key hypothalamic energy sensors, including adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and S6 kinase (S6K).

Here, we describe a new cell-based assay system that utilizes a hyperactive mutant BK(Ca) channel. The hyperactive mutant was generated by introducing two point-mutations into the cytosolic flexible interface between the two RCK domains of the wild-type BK(Ca) channel.

LXR activation has been shown to suppress RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation, but its underlying mechanisms and its influence on inflammatory bone destruction remain unclear. In this study, we report that the LXR agonists T0901317 and GW3965 inhibit osteoclastogenesis from primary BMMs in a dose-dependent manner.

In this paper, we show that the inhibition of Nek6 expression by Nek6 siRNA-mediated knockdown or the overexpression of a dominant negative form of Nek6 (Nek6KM) induced premature senescence as well as cell death under reduced serum conditions in multiple cancer cell lines, including both p53 wild-type and p53 mutant/null backgrounds. Moreover, cancer cells expressing Nek6KM exhibited significantly increased premature senescence upon treatment with the anticancer drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and camptothecin (CPT).

However, it has not been investigated how oral metformin affects meal patterns, or whether the reduced food intake is associated with neuronal activation in the hindbrain. Accordingly, we investigated how orally administered metformin (150 or 300 mg/kg daily for 4 or 7 days) reduces body weight in obese mice on a high-fat diet by continuously measuring meal patterns, energy expenditure, and locomotor activity, and whether oral metformin (300 mg/kg daily for 3 days) increases c-Fos expression in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) and area postrema.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether CO limits bone loss through its effects on osteoclastogenesis. Intraperitoneal injection of CO-releasing molecule 2 (CORM2) into mice with reduced bone mass due to ovariectomy (OVX) resulted in significantly elevated bone mass.

The developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein-2 (DRG2) is a novel subclass of GTP-binding proteins. Many functional characteristics of osteoclasts (OC) are associated with small GTPases. We hypothesized that DRG2 affects bone mass via modulating OC activity.

However, the intracellular signaling pathway responsible for up-regulation of IL-8 production in breast cancer cells has remained unclear.
Methodology/principal Findings: In this study, we report that the expression of BLT2 is markedly up-regulated in the highly aggressive human breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-435 compared with MCF-10A immortalized human mammary epithelial cells, as determined by RT-PCR, real-time PCR and FACS analysis.

Objectives: This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of enhanced penetration of platelet rich plasma with ultrasound after plasma fractional radiofrequency for the treatment of striae distensae.

The cause and pathogenesis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) remain unknown. IL-1β is one of the most powerful inflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between interleukin-1 β (IL-1β) gene polymorphisms (-511 C/T and +3953 C/T) in patients with SSNHL.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of fibrinogen on number and function of osteoclasts (OC) consequently resulting in bone loss. It was hypothesized that the enhanced level of released fibrinogen due to loss of ovarian function caused bone loss by acting on OCs. Bone loss was induced by ovariectomy (OVX) in mice and analyzed by micro-CT.

To address this question, we evaluated bone mass by micro-computed tomography and the number and activity of OC by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and pit formation on dentine slices, comparing HVEM-knockout mice with wild-type mice. The absence of HVEM led to a higher bone mass and to decreased levels of serum collagen type I fragments and serum TRACP5b in vivo.
