Background: Phloroglucinol (PG), a polyphenolic compound, has been proposed to show free radical scavenging, anti-tumor, and immunomodulation effects on immune cells. In this study, we investigated PG for its immunological activity and their molecular mechanisms, specifically focusing on the functional activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NFkappaB), an important transcription factor involved in the activation and differentiation of lymphocytes, and subsequent recruitment of murine lymphocytes.

Nuclear receptor subfamily 6, group A, member 1 (NR6A1), also known as germ cell nuclear factor/retinoid receptor-related testis-associated receptor and neuronal cell nuclear factor, is a member of the nuclear orphan receptor superfamily. The present study examined the gonadotropin regulation of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) and PACAP type I receptor (PAC(1)-R) expression, and its role in progesterone production in the human luteinized granulosa cells. The stimulation of both PACAP and PAC(1)-R mRNA levels by LH was detected using a competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Dystrophic calcinosis cutis is diagnosed when calcium is deposited into previously damaged tissue by connective tissue disease, panniculitis, pseudoxanthoma elasticum or trauma. We report a case of dystrophic calcinosis cutis arising from the lesion of an epidermal cyst on the verrucous epidermal nevus. LL-37 is a human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide that is released in the skin after injury and acts to defend against infection and modulate the local cellular immune response. We observed in human dermal keloids that fibrosis was inversely related to the expression of cathelicidin and sought to determine how LL-37 influenced expression of types I and III collagen genes in dermal fibroblasts. At nano-molar concentrations, LL-37 inhibited baseline and transforming growth factor-beta-induced collagen expression.

The proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin (PCSKs), a family of subtilisin-like proteases, is the processing enzymes for the activation of many hormone precursors. The present study was designed to identify the PCSK isoform expressed in the ovary and to examine its expression in gonadotropin-stimulated rat ovary. Northern blot analysis of ovaries obtained from prepubertal rats revealed an increased expression of Pcsk5 messenger RNA (mRNA) during development with the highest levels at 21 days of age.

Using principles of community-based participatory research, the authors conducted a prospective clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of a mailed vs an in-class culturally tailored education intervention.
